Thomas Duskin1

M, b. circa 1856, d. April 29, 1884
Thomas Duskin was born circa 1856 at Tazewell Co., Virginia.2,3 He married Susannah A. "Susan" Elmore, daughter of Alford "Alfred" Elmore and Catherine Niday, on July 4, 1872 at Roane Co., West Virginia.2 Thomas Duskin died on April 29, 1884 at Roane Co., West Virginia.1 He The State Journal gives the following acconut of the murder of Thomas Duskin, whose murder April 29, was announced a few days later but without particulars: Tuesday evening, 29th ult, about sundown Thomas Duskin and Van Elmore were grubbing in a field for John Thompson, whose farm is just across the Kanawha line in Roane county. They were working about 16 or 20 feet apart when the report of a gun was heard. Duskin threw his hands to his breast and exclaimed, "Lord have mercy, I am killed." Elmore looked in the direction from which the gun was fired, but could see no one. Both of them ran. About sixty yards from where they started they came to a fence. Duskin was unable to get over it, and holding on to it with his hands to keep from falling, for he had lost much blood; he told Elmore to go to the house and tell Thompson's people that he had been shot. Elmore ran on in the direction of the house and when he got some distance from Duskin he heard him loudly cry out in the most piteous manner. Elmore went on further and then turned and looked back but conid see no one. Arriving at the house he told what had happened, and Mrs. Thompson and her son and Elmore started to the field where Duskin had been left, and arriving there, Duskin was found lying on the ground, about six feet from the fence he had been holding to. His feet were toward the fence, and he was found to be dead. There were five wounds on his head, the skull being mashed in and a terrible hole in the back part of his head, where he had been hit with a five pound rock. Tracks in the field showed that Duskin had been followed by two men to the fence to which he was holding. The distressing outcry which Elmore heard soon after he lrft him, was caused by the blows inflicted upon Duskin's head with rocks. Further examination showed that he had been shot in the right breast near the nipple, the ball coming out near the right shoulder blade. He was shot, it was thought, with a rifle. Duskin had made himself obnoxious to many people in Roane and other counties by testifying against them before Federal Court grand juries and causing them to be indicted. It is even hinted that threats had been made against his life by some. on May 12, 1884.1
