Mrs. Smith was a kind and gentle woman, devoted to family and friends as well as her church. Following the death of her husband, Covington Postmaster R. Frazier Smith Jr. in 1966, she returned to the workforce as Deputy Clerk of the General District and Juvenile Domestic Relations Courts of Alleghany County. She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, Covington, where she served as a deacon and elder. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert L. Cross, Jr. of Staunton and Theodore Joseph Cross of Roanoke. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Smith and William F. Earehart Jr., of Covington; daughter, Ruth Ellen Smith of Roanoke; a sister, Jean C. (Mrs. John) Rice of Covington; grandchildren, Cynthia Lynn Earehart of Woodstock, Scott Frazier Earehart and his wife, Carrie Earehart of Greensboro, N.C., and Elizabeth Anne Ayers of Roanoke; as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 1997 in the Chapel of Loving Funeral Home, Covington with the Rev. James A Rohne officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. on July 3, 1997.1
