Marvin Eugene Reed, 78, of Matoaka, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Princeton Community Hospital after suffering a long illness. Born Sept. 4, 1933 at Widemouth, he was the son of the late Lewis Reed and Myrtle Kegley Reed. Mr. Reed served in the U.S. Navy for 11 years through the Korean War and Cuban crisis. He attended schools at Springton and Matoaka. He retired from the Mercer County Board of Education after 24 years of service. He was a member of the Cornerstone Independent Baptist Church in Princeton. He loved to travel, watch Cincinnati Reds baseball games and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Reed; and one sister, Janice McKinney. Survivors include his loving and caring wife of 54 years, Vernia Mae Underwood Reed; two sons, Ricky Reed and his wife, Rvonne, of Crumpler, and Keith Reed and his wife, Trish, of Matoaka; five brothers, Walter Reed and his wife, Louise, of New Oxford, Pa., Ronnie Reed of Pottsboro, Texas, Lewis Reed of Pottsboro, Texas, Kenneth Reed and his wife, Joyce, of Sherman, Texas, and Calvin Reed of Pottsboro, Texas; two sisters, Glenda Reed of Jena, La. and Judy Wade of Chattanooga, Tenn; two grandchildren, Candice Reed and Thomas Reed; four adopted grandchildren, James, Utah, Zachary, Issac; three great-grandchildren, Shade, Jeramiah and Logan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. James Ford and the Rev. Marvin McKinney officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Funeral honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Reed, Ronnie Reed, James Reed, Jamie Ford, Richard Underwood and Ronnie Cecil. on June 7, 2012.4
