Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem with Mr. Jim Herron officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Church of Christ, Salem. on August 5, 1992.1

After retirement, he served as a volunteer chaplain at both San Quentin Prison and the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, where he worked closely with AIDS patients and their families. Wally was a graduate of Atlanta Christian College and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Benicia, Calif. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Virginia DeWitt Altice of Vallejo; sons, Christopher Altice of Vallejo and his daughter, Kimberly, Eric Altice and his wife, Miki and their children, Victoria and Kankuro of Los Angeles; sisters, Barbara Witt and Rebecca Kelley of Salem, Va. and Alice Wirt of Houston, Texas. A memorial service was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Benicia, with the Rev. Wendy Watson officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the Alzheimer's Association, 251 Lafayette Circle, Lafayette, Calif. 94549. on January 18, 2004.4

He is survived by four children, Jeremy Roop and wife, Brenda, Christopher, Daniel and Nathenia Roop; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Nicole, Emma, Sarah, Joselyn and Chris Roop; one sister, Diane Helvey and husband, Ricky; one brother, Cecil Ray Roop; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. We would like to thank a very special Pastor and his wife and family for their support, the Rev. and Mrs. Wallace (Buck) Yopp. Billy will be laid to rest at a veteran's cemetery in Maryland on January 8, 2010. Billy will be sadly missed by all but he is with the angels now and has no more suffering. We love you! On December 30, 2009.2

Hardy, 94, of 272 Raven Hollow Road, died Thursday, September 1, 2005 at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center. He had been in declining health for five years and in Riverside Health Care for two weeks. Born July 27, 1911, in Keeling, he was the son of the late James W. Hardy and the late Nettie Lewis Hardy. He lived most of his life in Ringgold. He was a retired farmer, an avid gardener, and of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army in World War II. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct medal, the Bronze Star medal, the Distinguished Unit badge and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was married to Sarah McCormick Hardy. In addition to his wife of 62 years, of the residence, he is survived by a sister, Ethel H. Slaughter of Ringgold. He was predeceased by three sisters, Mildred H. Hardy, Mabel Hardy and Gracie H. Alderson. The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 3 at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times they will be at the residence, 272 Raven Hollow Road, Ringgold. The family suggests that memorial donations may be given to Kentuck Volunteer Fire Dept., 200 Ringgold Church Road, Ringgold, VA 24586; and to the Ringgold Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 10, Ringgold, VA 24586. Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements. on September 2, 2005.2

Mrs. Slaughter was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, was active in Bible School activities and she also helped start the first nursery at the church. She enjoyed visiting neighbors as well as greeting new neighbors; she enjoyed babysitting neighborhood children and she was an excellent seamstress. She was a homemaker. She was married to the late Ralph Hunter Slaughter who died June 21, 1997. She is survived by two daughters, Judy S. Stuckert and husband, Ronnie Stuckert Jr., of Ringgold and Ellen S. Nester and husband, Jerry Nester, of Blairs; grandchildren, Rodney S. Davis and James H. Nester; four step-grandchildren, Thomas R. Stuckert, Tammy R. Stuckert, Teresa S. Quesenberry and Tracy L. Stuckert; and five step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, William Hardy; three sisters, Hester Mildred Hardy, Gracie Alderson and Mable Hardy; a daughter, Janice Fay Beadles; and her husband, Tim Beadles. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William Soyars officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, 2025 North Main St; at other times they will be at the home of Jerry and Ellen Nester, 977 Lawless Creek Road, Blairs.
