Roy Nowels passed away Wednesday morning at his home just west of the Loma store, after an extended illness, and the funeral services will be held at the chapel of the Starks-DeYarman funeral home in Fruita at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. J. Edwin Elder of Fruita will have charge of the services and burial will be in the Fruita cemetery. Cassius LeRoy Nowels was born in Lorahia, Ia., on July 20, 1874, and he passed away at the age of 56 years. He had been a resident of the western states for some years and was well known in Loma, where he had made his home for years. He had been in Soldier Summit, Utah, for a time, but a few months ago he and his family returned to Loma when he became ill. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Lula Nowels, and four childen. The three younger children are aged 6, 8 and 14 years, and the older daughter, Mrs. Wallace Hurley, and her husband are enroute to Fruita from their home in Ontario, Calif., to be present at the funeral. on October 23, 1930.2

She was the widow of a Loma area farmer, Cashes LeRoy Nowels, who died in October 1930. The Nowels came to Mesa County 35 years ago from Oklahoma. They were married at Woodward, Okla., on Nov. 18, 1903. Mrs. Nowels was born at Norton, Kan., on Nov. 18, 1886. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a son, Everett, of Ogden, Utah; three daughters, Mrs. Ethia Hurley of Glendale, Calif.. . . and . . . , and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Martin's Chapel. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. on April 11, 1964.1 She died on April 11, 1964 at Mesa Co., Colorado, at age 77.1

Other survivors include a son. . ; three sisters, Ethia Hurley and Wilma Thompson, both of Pacific Groves, Calif., and Margie Boyd of Denver; two grandsons; and a granddaughter. Graveside services were at 10 a.m. June 17. Burial was in the Veterans Garden of Honor in Phoenix. on June 21, 1988.2

For several months she had been in ill health due to an anemic condition but when the end came it was rather sudden and unexpected. She had joined the Christian Church at Walnut City when fourteen years old. She was united in marriage on New Years eve 1924 to Mr. Orville Taintorof (should be Tainter) Kansas City, Mo. To this union no children were born. Besides the husband she leaves to mourn, father and mother, one brother, Orville Best and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Green of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Miss Giada Best at home. A loved one from my home is gone. A voice I loved is stilled, A vacancy is in my home, That never can be filled. She was fully conscious to the last and almost in the last breath she said, "I want to go Home". It is there we hope to meet again. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church in Moravia. No pastor being present, Rev. O. J. Fix of the Methodist church delivered the sermon, on Friday afternoon, July the 9th, 1920. Brief services had also been held in the Funeral Director's Parlors in Kansas City. Burial took place in the Salem cemetery, just west of Moravia. on July 15, 1926.3

Hazard, the wedding taking place October 28, 1928, at Centerville, Iowa. Immediately after the wedding they moved to Tisgah, Iowa, where they resided for three months. Mr. Hazard then being principal of the high school at that place. Then they resided in Osceola for eight months, and then they moved to Tama. After residing here for a year they removed to Coffeeville, Kansas, where they resided for about four months, after which they returned to Tama. Mrs. Hazard was a member of the Christian church at Moravia and was a member of the Tama Auxiliary to the American Legion. Two years ago Mrs. Hazard won the bathing beauty contest conducted atthe Lake Cherry beach as the feature of the American Legion's Fourth ofJuly celebration. She was well known and particularly well liked for her cheerful disposition and friendliness. She was the second wife of Robert J. Hazard. Mrs. Hazard is survived by her father, Jesse Best of Walnut City, her mother, Mrs. Fred Reed of Jetmore, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Clyde O. Green of Coffeeville, Kansas, and a brother, Orville Best, of Kansas City. She was preceded in death by one sister, Miss Roma Best. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 9:30 from the Harrison Funeral Home at Tama, with Rev. C. J. Bukoutz, pastor of the Baptist church at Tama, officiating. Miss Mildred Rice sang "No Night There" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Miss Lulu McCall accompanied at the piano. The members of the American Legion Auxiliary attended in a body. Services were also held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the church at Walnut City. Interment was made in the cemetery 2 miles west of Moravia, beside a sister and grandmother. on August 2, 1934.3

She was born in Moravia, Ia., July 9, 1976. She married Frank Selby and resided in Moravia until his death. Then she came to California where she lived until she and C.A. Turner married in Upland, Calif. He took her back to Moravia, where she lived until his death. She again came to Calif., and has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Fern Handy, 841 South Serrano Avenue, Los Angeles, the past six years. She passed away Sept. 17 after a brief illness. Mrs. Turner remained a member of the Moravia Garden club, the W.S.C.S., and the Rebekahs. She was worthy matron of the Eastern Stars and later served them as chaplain for several years. She continued her membership in the Moravia Methodist church. Dr. J. Richard Sneed, born in Moravia, a family friend and many years the minister of the first Methodist Church of Los Angeles delivered the eulogy. Mrs. Turner is survived by three daughters, Oneita Selby, Mrs. Fontelle Selby Swenson and Mrs. Fern Selby Handy (all of Los Angeles); a sister, Eva Frome George of Rialto; two grandsons, Waldo Earl Handy of Indianapolis, Frank Selby Handy of Los Angeles, and three great-grandchildren. Interment was in Sanctuary of Honor, Hollywood Memorial Park. on September 27, 1965.8
