Mr. McDaniel was born on April 23, 1925, in Markham, and was a son of the late Larry Pritchard McDaniel and the late Agnes Davis McDaniel. He had lived most of his life in Danville where he was employed by John W. Daniel Construction Co. as a supervisor for 34 years. He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church now known as United Baptist Church for 50 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On July 3, 1948, he was married to Nellie Farthing McDaniel, who survives. In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Larry Thomas "Tommy" McDaniel, Jr. and wife, Ann of Danville; two grandchildren, Larry Thomas McDaniel III and wife, Kimberly of San Antonio, Texas, Lisa Powell and husband, Kenneth of Danville; three great-grandchildren, Kenneth "Kenny" Wayne Powell, Jr., Carter Alan Powell, both of Danville and Cooper James McDaniel of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Henry T. McDaniel and wife, Helen of Java; three sisters, Gaynelle Terry, Mary Alice Crowder and husband, Franklin of Java, Shirley Rowland and husband, Leon of Chatham; he was predeceased by two brothers, W.R. McDaniel, Sydnor McDaniel and one sister, Judith Ford. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm, Sunday, April 18, from United Baptist Church by Dr. Adam Woods and Rev. Harold Kistler officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with Military Rites to be performed by Dan River Post 1097, American Legion Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at United Baptist Church from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 18, prior to the service. The family suggests that contributions may be made to United Baptist Church, 3400 US Hwy 29, Danville, Va. 24540 or to the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541. Nellie spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, Virginia. She graduated from Spring Garden High School with honors in 1948. She was a faithful member of the former Keen Street Baptist Church, now United Baptist Church, for more than 50 years. She loved her church and the people very much. She served as President of her Sunday School Class for many years and also other committees of the Church, including being ordained as a Deacon, and served as long as she was able. On July 3, 1948, she married her beloved husband, Larry T. McDaniel Sr., of 61 years, who predeceased her on April 15, 2010. Prior to her retirement, she was employed with Leggett's Department Store, Chatham, Virginia and Belk Leggett downtown Danville, Virginia for many years. Nellie loved to travel, work in her home, enjoyed her family and friends. She truly loved her four great-grandsons. They were the love of her life. She never met a stranger. She is survived by one son, Larry "Tommy" T. McDaniel Jr. and wife, Ann, of Danville, Virginia; two grandchildren, Lisa M. McDaniel Powell and husband, Kenneth W. Powell, of Danville, Virginia, and Larry T. McDaniel III and wife, Kimberly, of San Antonio, Texas; four great-grandsons, Kenny and Carter Powell of Danville, Virginia, and Cooper and Caden McDaniel of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Kathleen F. Merchant of Danville, Virginia, Jean F. Yates of Lynchburg, Virginia; one brother, James M. Farthing and wife, Patty, of Gretna, Virginia; and a number of dearly loved nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Jessie "J.B." B. Farthing Jr. of Renan, Virginia and Marvin Ray Farthing ofGretna, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 2 p.m. at United Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Adam Woods. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Nellie's memory be made to United Baptist Church 3400 US Hwy 29 Danville, VA 24540. on October 14, 2016.3
