Hall, son of Roscoe Staten Hall and Mary Fay/Faye Elizabeth Bailey, on May 1, 1976 at Roanoke, Virginia.2 Elizabeth Catherine Long died on October 14, 2019 at Virginia at age 92.1 She Elizabeth Catherine Hall of Roanoke, Va., departed on her next journey of faith on Monday, October 14, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, compassion and love. Born on October 17, 1926, to James Aaron and Betty Marie Long, she was the seventh of what would become nine children. Growing up on a farm, she developed at an early age the work ethic that would guide her through the rest of her life. Faced with the daunting task of raising two young sons by herself, she would go on to work several different jobs before settling into a career at Eli Lily. She would spend the rest of her professional career at Eli Lily before retiring in her early 60s. Most folks would at this point be content to relax and enjoy their “golden years.” Not Liz! As a mom, there are not words that could express adequately the job she did. Raising two sons alone was not an easy task but one that she excelled at. She made sure that there was always food on the table, clean clothes to wear and always presents under the tree. She taught us right from wrong, to be kind and respectful to everyone and to always try our best. As with most moms, her children were her proudest achievement. Having joined the congregation at First Baptist Church in the early 1960s, she would now enter her next career as a tireless emissary of the church teaching Sunday School, volunteering whenever there was a need and finally becoming a member of the Homebound Ministry. The many hours she would spend visiting the sick and injured was a true testament to her compassion and love for all she met. Over the years she took great comfort in being able to be with those in their time of need, sitting with many as they took their last breath. Her hope was that she was able to in some way, ease their fears and make sure that they knew that they would not be alone. Preceding her in death are her parents; and siblings, Ralph, Clarence, Margaret, Thomas, Wilford, Ida and Virginia. Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Daisy Fisher; sons, Richard (Joan) Via and Lynn (Mary) Via; grandchildren, Jeremy, Eric, Kaitlyn, and Nicholas; and numerous nieces and nephews. To her extended church family, she loved you dearly, please remember her fondly. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel. A Funeral Service celebrating Liz’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2019, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay Dove officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. on October 18, 2019.1
