Richards was born on December 28, 1920 at Virginia.1,4 She died on December 20, 2012 at Virginia at age 91.4,3 She Marcella Richards Carlin, 90, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 20, 2012. Marcella was preceded in death by her parents, John Solomon (Sol) Richards and Mabel Thurman Richards of Roanoke/Salem; her husband, Charles Wendel (Chuck) Carlin; four brothers, Moody, Talmadge, Bill, and Pat Richards; and three sisters, Helena Gormican, Mildred Reynolds, and Marie Thomason. Marcella is survived by her four children, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren: daughters, Karen C. Brooks, Atlanta, Ga., Lorie N. Carlin, Roanoke; two sons, David W. Carlin, San Antonio, Texas, Richard Mark Carlin and, wife, Karen, Roanoke; granddaughters Heather B. Winfield, husband, Jason, State College, Pa., Courtney C. Jimerson, husband, Greg, Frisco, Texas, and Brooke C. Trumbower, husband, David, Roanoke; great-grandchildren Holly and Jonah Winfield, Anthony, Lilah, and Zachary Jimerson, and Ty Trumbower. Marcella is also survived by her sister-in-law, Kathleen Carlin Kisabeth, and many nieces and nephews including Shirley Fisher, Brenda Williams, Margaret Bochoras, and Betty Lou King. Marcella graduated from Jefferson High School and National Business College. After marrying, she became a full-time homemaker until her children were grown. Marcella 's favorite hobbies included playing bridge, working in the yard with her flowers and being a member of a garden club. Marcella was a terrific cook, with desserts being her favorite. She loved all animals and enjoyed tending to the birds, squirrels, and rabbits in her yard. Marcella and husband Chuck were avid sports fans and once attended a unique Rose Bowl game on New Year's Day, 1942. Originally scheduled to be played in Pasadena, Calif., with cancellation imminent due to fear of a West Coast attack following the strike on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, the game was moved to Durham, N.C. at Duke University's request. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be conducted on her birthday, Friday, December 28, at 1 p.m. at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 3550 Poplar Drive, Roanoke, by the Rev. Brent Williams. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to your favorite charity. The family wishes to thank the staff of South Roanoke Nursing home for their Care and Compassion. on December 27, 2012.3
