He, through Fellowship Bible Study Center, was able to impact many lives at New Life for Youth in Southside and The Fix in King William. He also enjoyed his Tuesday morning Men of Ministry Bible Study. Clay is survived by his wife, Norma, of 44 wonderful years; a loving son, Kevin; a beautiful daughter-in-law, Megan; and eight precious grandchildren, Cadence, Justus, Asher, Israel, Silas, Keilah, Patience and Nevaeh - they were truly the apple of his eye and he boasted of them every chance he got! He is also survived by his sister, Cheri Taylor (Dennis); and two nieces, Salene and Charlene of Texas. Clay lived a full life and there is sadness for our loss but rejoicing for his gain! On September 15, 2021.3

Born Dec. 16, 1945, in Albemarle County, he was a son of the late Walter Early Wheeler Sr. and Helen F. Chambers Wheeler Cubbage, who survives. He was a member of Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, a member of American Legion Post 0141 of Richmond and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4809, and he retired from the United States Navy after 30 years of service. During his Naval career, he received the Purple Heart, Joint Commendation medal, Navy Commendation medal, two Navy Achievement medals, three Combat Action ribbons, Navy Unit commendation, Battle "E" ribbon, two Good Conduct medals and seven National Defense Service medals. Prior to his illness, he was employed as a correctional officer with the Virginia Department of Corrections in Craigsville with the rank of sergeant. Survivors include his wife, Ina Kay (Barr) Wheeler; a son, Russell Wheeler and his wife, Heidi, of Mount Solon; two daughters, Betty Jo Wheeler and Tammy Reedy of Waynesboro; a brother, Walter E. Wheeler Jr. of Waynesboro; two sisters, Shirley Moyer of Grottoes and Jean Iseli of Waynesboro; brother-in-law, William Wright of Kenosha, Wis; five grandchildren, Hunter and Desmond Cassell, Fisher William Wheeler, Dagon Michael-Rose Wheeler and Curtis Scott Wimer; and one great-grandchild, Jarrad Terrell. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church at 901 Shenandoah Ave. with Pastors Paul LaPrevotte and Will Heyward officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park with military rites. Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Randozzo, Charles Ailstock, Allen Wiley, Frank Pritt, Reginald Dandridge and Roger Morgan. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Hummell, Dale Moyer, Bob Campbell, Kent and Kevin Wheeler, Daren Lam and Mike Helmick.
