     Russell W. Thornton Russell W. Thornton, 91, of Springfield, died at 6:55 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Memorial Medical Center. Russell was born on April 14, 1930, in Springfield, the son of Lynn and Margaret (Owens) Thornton. He married Elizabeth O’Neal on December 12, 1951, in Springfield. Russ proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, the Illinois National Guard, and the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the Springfield Ski and Boat Club and Springfield Elks Lodge #158. Russ enjoyed camping, boating, and traveling. Most importantly, Russ loved spending time with his family and his dog, Missy. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Frances Schleyhahn; and brother, Lynn Thornton. His grandson, David Clark III, passed away shortly after Russ on August 25, 2021. Russell is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty”; daughter, Gail (Ron) Thornton Gustin; son, Tim Thornton; foster-daughter, Shari Hall, all of Springfield; grandchildren, Josh (Jackie) Turasky of Rochester and Sommer Thornton of Springfield; granddaughter-in-law, Lisa Grant of Springfield; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; brothers, Jim Thornton of Springfield, and Harry Thornton of Pawnee; and many nieces and nephews.      Lynn Elwood Thornton Jr. Lynn E. Thornton, Jr. "Mr. Mae" passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013, at his home. He was born June 5, 1931 to Lynn Elwood and Margaret (Owens) Thornton. Lynn was a US Air Force veteran serving in the Korean War. He was the owner and operator of Mae's Cake Toppers. He is survived by 3 brothers, James V. Thornton and Russell W. Thornton (Betty) of Springfield and Harry Q. Thornton of Pawnee; a daughter, Lynette M. Jones (Edward); 2 sons, David A. Thornton (Rena Bergstrom) and Talon J. Thornton (Monica); 10 grandchildren, Michelle L. Furlong (Tim Felber), Matthew E. Jones (Tara), Marlayna L. Morgan (Robert Nelson), Melanie S. Thornton (Brian Nabb), Ashley L. Thornton (Noah Payne), Lindsey J. Roberts (Kevin), Caitlyn H., Logan A., Jenna M. and Nolan P. Thornton; 11 great-grandchildren, Austin, Drew, Gracie, Chase, Mikayla, Cameron, Lauryn, Jacob, Brayden, Bryce and Kylee. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Thornton; great-grandson, Nathan Myers; a sister, Frances Schleyhahn; and his former wife and close friend, Musetta "Mae" Thornton. Scroggins Thornton, 80, of Springfield, formerly of California, died at 7:55 a.m. Friday at St. John's Hospice. She was born in Dawson, March 27, 1908, the daughter of Joseph and Beatrice Walls Rodgerson. She married Russell Thornton in 1979. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Reynolds. A resident of Springfield for 20 years, Mrs. Thornton was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband, Russell; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jacqueline) McFaul of Hollywood, Calif; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Lila Hohimer and Mrs. Maxine Burgar, both of Springfield; one son, Ed Scroggins of Reseda, Calif; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 18 stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Vivian Rodgerson Evans of Springfield; one brother, Joe Rodgerson of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Staab Funeral Home, with Dr. Robert Langworthy officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. on May 6, 1989.¹

     Leuna Neice was buried at Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, Giles Co., Virginia.² She was born on December 3, 1922 at Giles Co., Virginia.^4,2 As of May 4, 1946,her married name was Martin.³ She married Roy Glen Martin, son of Charles H. "Charlie" "Uncle" Martin and Bertha Leona Brumfield, on May 4, 1946 at Pearisburg, Giles Co., Virginia.^1,2,3 Leuna Neice died on April 26, 2004 at Pearisburg, Giles Co., Virginia, at age 81.^4,2 She Leuna Martin, 81, of Sam Robinson Apartments in Pembroke, died Monday evening April 26, 2004 at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Giles County on December 3, 1922, she was a daughter of the late George Harvey and Ruby Hilton Neice. She was retired from Holiday Inn and was a member of Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Martin; three brothers, Billy, Albert, and Buddy Neice; and three sisters, Carmen Elmore, Annie Sanders, and Mary Kast. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Roy G. Martin; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Lee and Ellen M. Martin of Pembroke, David Martin of North Carolina, and Todd and Robin Reed Martin of Newport; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Myers of Newport, and Alice and Bobby Huffman of Rich Creek; two sisters, Bonnie Eppely of Christiansburg and Lida Williams of Pearisburg; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with Pastor Shahn Wilburn and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Missionary Fund at Riverview Baptist Church, P.O. Box 206 Ripplemead, Va. 24150 on April 28, 2004.²
