( Bill ) McCartney LCDR USN (Ret.) of Charleston SC entered into eternal rest on May 5, 2019. He was married to the love of his life Frances R. McCartney who entered into eternal rest on May 10, 2019. They were married for 67 years. Bill was born June 8, 1930 in Bradenton, Florida and Frances was born July 24, 1930 in Miami, Florida. Bill proudly served his country for 25 years in the United States Navy. We was a Vietnam Veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star. After retiring from the Navy, he was the Public Safety Chief at the College of Charleston before moving to a long career at Monarch Building Supply. He was an honorary member of the South Carolina Sheriff's Association and a member of the Elks Lodge. He was an avid golfer and a member of The Santee Super Seniors Golf Club. Frances was a loving ,caring wife and mother. She loved music and dancing and had a wonderful sense of humor. She worked for many years at Sears and then Joli Maternity wear helping expectant mothers with their wardrobe. She was also a Red Cross volunteer for a period of time. They are survived by three children all of Charleston. Rosanne Burke (Wes), Bill McCartney (Tina), and Mary McCartney. Eight Grandchildren and Sixteen Great-Grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held Saturday May 18, 2019 at Seacoast Church 2049 Savannah Hwy Charleston SC 29407. The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. to noon with a memorial service immediately following. Interment will be at Live Oak Memorial Gardens at 3093 Ashley River Rd. Charleston SC 29414 at 3:00 pm. on May 14, 2019.4

Native of Bristol TN but spent most of her life in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late W.W. Wood and Lottie Framer Wood, she worked for the Tar Hill Mica Company for 30 years and was a member of the Burleson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church on Henson Creek. Survivors of Mrs. Carpenter include, husband, Lemuel A. Carpenter of the home, sons, Arthur Wayne Carpenter of Plumtree and Milan B. Carpenter of Hickory, daughter, Martha Thomas of Burnsville, sisters, Lucy Sparks of Newland, Gladys Arnold of Bristol TN, Christian Brewer of Bristol TN and Nell Tabor of Bristol, TN , and brother, Jack Wood of Bristol TN. Also survived by eleven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Interment will follow in the Little Elk Mountain Cemetery.1

She was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Bristol, Va., a daughter of the late William Washington and Lottie Jane Farmer Wood. Lucy was a member of Chestnut Dale Baptist Church and enjoyed watching birds, gardening, flowers, cooking and her angel collection. She worked at Tar Hill Mica Co. in Plumtree for 46 years before retiring. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Warren Sparks; sisters, Vinnie Lee Carpenter, Wanda Carpenter and Jennette Wood; and one brother, Hanes Wood. Left to cherish her memories are her son, Skip Sparks and wife, Lynette, of Morganton; her three daughters, Betty Morris of Hickory, Velma Corn and husband, Eury, of the home and Marion McCall and husband, Randy, of Hilton Head, S.C; sisters, Nell Tolbert, Christine Booher and Gladys Arnold, all of Bristol, Tenn; and brothers, Jack Wood and C.W. Wood, both of Bristol, Tenn. Eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren also survive. The family will receive friends tonight, Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Chestnut Dale Baptist Church. The Revs. Andy Willis and Lonnie Barnes and Mr. Dink Hoilman will officiate. Interment will follow in Ashley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Lucy's memory to Avery County Hospice, P.O. Box 1357, Newland, N.C. 28657. on November 21, 2009.1

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Vinnielee Ellen Carpenter, sisters Opal Johnson and Donnie Johnson and one brother Miles Carpenter.
