Survivors include his wife, Shelley, Rose Creek, Minn; three sons, Jeremy David, John David Jr., and Christopher Michael, all at home; his mother, Janice Riker, Hanlontown; his father, David Bierbrodt of Florida; stepfather, James Riker, Hanlontown; one sister, Mrs. Mark (Jan) Vaage, Mason City; three brothers, Sterling and Kent, both of Osage, and Todd of Vicenza, Italy; grandfather, Douglas Vernus, Minneapolis, Minn; two grandmothers, Carlene Wigant, Osage, and Edna Bierbrodt, Rochester, Minn; one half-brother, Sam Riker, Hanlontown; one half-sister, Angel Riker, Hanlontown; stepgrandmother, Martha Riker, Osage; one stepbrother, Teodoro Riker, Marshfield, Wis; and one stepsister, Rosa McKenna, Elma.      Dale Eugene Hughes Dale Eugene Hughes was born January 6, 1931 in Prairie City, Iowa the son of Kenneth Albert and Olive Maureen (Kain) Hughes. Dale was raised in the Percy, Iowa area and as a young man, he worked for local farmers. He served in the United States Army from 1952 – 1954 and was stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. On January 1, 1953 Dale was united in marriage to Betty Hendrix. Following his discharge from the Army, Dale worked in the construction business and he and Betty lived in various locations. They later moved to Redfield, Iowa for 5 years before moving to Knoxville where they have lived most of their married life. Dale worked for Elevator Contractors, where he built and maintained grain elevators for 25 years. He helped found Kain Construction and then started Iowa Elevator in Carlisle. He retired in 1994. In his spare time, Dale volunteered for the Knoxville Schools music program, driving the instrument truck and trailer for many years. He and Betty also enjoyed camping and traveling. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially spoiling the grandchildren. Dale passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center, in Des Moines, at the age of 86 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis and brother, Charlie. Charles attended Willow Grove Country School in Marion County as a boy. He then went on to attend Pleasantville High School where he graduated in 1935, graduating 5 days after his 16th birthday, this making him the youngest person to graduate from Pleasantville High School. He then went on to attend 4 C’s, taking a secretarial course. Charles enlisted in the United States Army on March 12, 1943 at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He was honorably discharged May 25, 1943 due to the need for farmers. Charles was a farmer all his life, retiring in 1988. He was united in marriage to Shirley Lea Worthington at the Christian Church in Pleasantville on October 24, 1945. Shirley passed away November 26, 1987. Charles was later united in marriage to Jeanie Clark at the Church of Christ in Pleasantville on December 3, 1989. He enjoyed the mountains of Colorado, fishing, hunting, collecting guns and time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Charles was known for being a bit mischievous with a great sense of humor. He was a member of the Fairview Church of Christ and the Pleasantville American Legion. Charles passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 9 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Shirley and a daughter, Teresa VanWyk.
