Donald Hamilton "Ham" Engbretson was buried at Sunset Hills Cemetery, East Main Street directly south of Lindley Park, Bozeman, Gallatin Co., Montana.2,6 He was born on August 20, 1920 at Trident, Gallatin Co., Minnesota.2,9,4,6,7 He married Ellen Ione Carr on September 16, 1941 at Livingston, Park Co., Montana.2,10,5,6 Donald Hamilton "Ham" Engbretson died on July 1, 2012 at Bozeman, Gallatin Co., Montana, at age 91.2,6 He Donald Hamilton "Ham" Engbretson (1920 - 2012) The war is over. The last WWII warrior of the famed Montana 163rd Infantry Division died suddenly in the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital on July 1, 2012, after spending a wondrous day visiting with family and friends at his bedside. Ham was born in Trident, Mont. on Aug. 20, 1920, to Mary Tressa (Reed) Engbretson and Clarence Harley Engbretson. His father disappeared from the family shortly after his birth and was never seen again. So, from an early age, he learned to survive the rigors of life. Other than the four years he spent fighting alongside his Australian comrades during the war, he spent his entire life in Bozeman and the beautiful Gallatin Valley. Ham attended Bozeman public schools and graduated in 1939 from Gallatin County High School. After completing high school, his dream was to continue the printing profession he learned in high school. Ham grew up during the Great Depression and worked hard to help provide for his mother and disabled brother. During his high school years, he dated Ellen Carr, the woman he would eventually marry on Sept. 16, 1941. Ham had joined the Army, and they moved to his posting in Washington. When war was declared on Dec. 7, 1941, she returned to Bozeman to work and wait for his return. Ham shipped out for Australia aboard the Queen Mary. His 163d was assigned to defend Australia from Japanese invasion and to stop Japanese domination of the South Pacific Islands. Toward this end, he took part in four beach landings as the 163d worked its way north across New Guinea. During one battle in the jungles of New Guinea, Ham, and his life-time buddy, LeRoy "Fritz" Switzler, single handedly turned back a Japanese night attack on their company. For his actions, he was cited to receive the Silver Star of Bravery, but lost paperwork and military confusion ended with him receiving the Bronze Star with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. The war took its toll on Ham and dominated the rest of his entire life. Not one day would go by that he did not mention the war. He never lost his love for Australia and its people. He spoke of them fondly and related many stories of the wonderful times he enjoyed there. But sadly, he never returned to the country that he so willingly gave his soul and youth to. When he returned to Bozeman, Ham and Ellen continued working and started adding to their small family. In a few years, they bought a farm in Bridger Canyon, the place he most loved. A series of untimely events forced them to sell their farm and move back to town. Ham worked as a printer for the Bozeman Daily Chronicle for 48 years until his retirement at age 70. He often joked that when he told someone where he worked, he spent the next half hour defending it. He enjoyed his work and his daily contact with the friendly people of Bozeman. Ham had many loves. He loved music and to dance, and he and Ellen danced together as often as they could, even if it was just in the kitchen. He loved his flowers and his birds. He kept many bird feeders in his yard and he always had a friendly flock of winged friends for him to enjoy. Ham especially loved Christmas, and, with Ellen as his designer, he built their famous front-yard Christmas displays for more than 40 years. While Ellen was the dreamer of dreams, Ham was the builder of dreams. For this he will always be remembered as the Christmas man who lived in the bright red house on South 11th. Their animated Christmas displays provided a special Christmas joy for three generations of Bozeman children and their parents. Ham loved his workshop and could always be found there working on one project or another. His youthful days working as a blacksmith were always called upon to put his skill to the test. There was not anything he could not make, fix, or build. He could work with any material: metal, wood, leather and cloth. He was a man of all trades. Ham loved his family, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. Much of his life and home evolved around bringing them delight, joy, and happiness. Nothing was too much bother or too out of the way to do for them. He would unselfishly be at their beck and call. If you ran out of eggs or butter or needed a flat fixed, he was never too busy to stop what he was doing to help you out. Ham was simply known as a down-to-earth person. He welcomed everyone into his home and made them feel special. He was a generous person, who gave unselfishly anything that he had. Sharp minded and witty to the end, he expressed his opinions plainly and openly. Whomever you were, he was your advocate. He supported you and without thought or complaint, or demand, would do anything in his power to help you. Most recently he contributed to the music fund of three of his great-grandsons so they could purchase musical instruments for their garage band. He never once asked to return a favor. Ham had all those rare old Montana characters: he was honest, patriotic, upstanding, and true. He was preceded in death in 2005, by Ellen, his wife of 64 years. Ham is survived by Ellen's two daughters, Marlea "Mickey" (Gene) Lennick, of Portland, Ore., Dianne (Bill) Gilleland, of Helena, Mont; by his two daughters, Janett (Greg) Byrne of Bozeman, and Debra (Verl) Clark of Bozeman; and two sons, Fred (Connie) Engbretson of Bozeman and Bill Engbretson of Bozeman. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Visitation at Dokken-Nelson's Sunset Chapel will be Thursday, July 5 from 12 to 8 p.m. Funeral services for Ham will be held on Friday, July 6, at 10 a.m. Interment of the urn, with full military honors, will follow at 3 p.m. in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. on July 4, 2012.2
