A native of Greenville, Mississippi, Willard was graduated from Greenville High School and the University of Southern Mississippi, earning a bachelor’s degree of science and two Master’s degrees. He later joined the U.S. Army, trained in the Nursing program, and started his career in anesthesia. Willard was very good at his profession and performed over 20,000 cases as a nurse anesthetist for more than 35 years, caring for his patients in the military and civilian worlds. Willard achieved the rank of Major in the U.S. Army, rising to the distinction of Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Willard was a proud military member, receiving a number of military service distinctions, including the National Defense Medal, the Humanitarian Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal for Operation Eagle Claw, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal for Uphold Democracy. His passion for civil service also earned him a chairman’s position with the Giles County, Virginia, Board of Supervisors. Willard was a devout animal lover and was particularly fond of his little dogs Gizmo and Boudreaux, his Scottish Highland cattle, horse, donkey and numerous cats and goats that he and Marjie raised on their small farm in Virginia. Willard loved boating, hosting friends and family on the trawler Vagabond Shoes in the Mississippi Sound, while living in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Willard was a former member of the Biloxi Yacht Club and enjoyed many hours with great friends at the Rub Rail. Willard shared close ties with friends in the Gulf Coast region especially while working to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, and returning to Roanoke, he was honorary member of the WHAs. Willard enjoyed sports, coaching his sons and their teams in the early years, and later traveling to watch his grandchildren participate in their events. He was an ardent Packers fan, taking a pilgrimage to Lambeau Field 20 years ago. Travel was another joy for Willard which included numerous trips to the western part of the U.S., along with multiple visits to Europe and the Caribbean. Highlights of some of his adventures included a German wedding, a Fort Lauderdale ‘Parrothead’ trip, and a Richard Petty Driving School Experience at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Burial in Sunset Cemetery. on July 26, 1974.5 She A prosecuting attorney told the story of a brief love affair that ended in cold-blooded murder as a man went on trial in Roanoke Circuit Court day for the fatal shooting his former sweetheart, The defendant, Bernard Lee, 41, of the 1500 block Queen Ann Avenue SE, listened impassively as Assistant Commonwealth’s Atty. Charles V. Hoback told the jury in his opening statement that Lee shot Janice Gilmore, 25, three times while her 2-year-old son, a 7-year-old child, and two women looked on. A jury of nine women and three men was selected to hear the case. Hoback said Lee and Ms. Gilmore had been living together for a few weeks prior to the shooting. He said Ms. Gilmore decided to break off the relationship and that she gathered Lee’s clothes and took them to the home of a relative of Lee’s, where she left them with a good-bye note. Hoback said the prosecution evidence would show that Lee went to a Roanoke pawn shop July 19, obtained a .32 caliber pistol, and went to a house in the 1200 block of Chapman Avenue SW, where he found Ms. Gilmore sitting on the front porch with two other young women. The prosecutor told the jury that the two women would testify that Lee walked up to the porch, had a few words with Ms. Gilmore then pulled out a pistol and shot her in the arm. She stood up, Hoback said, whereupon Lee shot her in the side. She stumbled off the porch and fell face down on the sidewalk and Lee walked to her prone form and shot her in the back, Hoback said. Then he said Lee walked away "nonchalantly” as it nothing unusual had happened, kicking a stone as he went. Lee's attorney, in a brief opening statement, did not deny that Lee had shot Ms. Gilmore. Instead he asked the jury to remember that “we do as humans make mistakes; we do have human frailties.” He called the episode “tragic” and said the jury will have to decide what crime Lee is guilty of, and what his punishment should be. He said he would prove that Lee was intoxicated with pills and whisky when the shooting occurred. on November 7, 1974.6 She Bernard Lee of Roanoke has been convicted of murder in the shooting death of a woman and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Lee was found guilty by a Roanoke Circuit Court jury Thursday night. He was charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Janice Gilmore in July.
