As a WW II veteran, Blanton realized the importance of living every day as if it were his last Serving as a scout in Company B of the 254th Infantry Regiment, he and his fellow soldiers were engaged in some of the worst fighting of the European theater. He received the Purple Heart, and in 1945, he and his unit were also awarded the Croix de Guerre, a French military decoration for bravery in action. Blanton's division has held several reunions in the years since the war, and they've stayed in touch with one another. Blanton always said that they went in as boys and came out as men. He often told us about milking the family cow before he got on the train to basic training camp in 1944. He wrote a book of fiction about his experiences, and also gave an oral history to the D.H. Ramsey Library Special Collections Dept at UNCA. This account can be viewed online as WW II Mountain Memories. After the war, he attended Wake Forest University and helped run the family tourist court on Tunnel Road. He also built and operated other businesses, such as a miniature golf course, an archery range, and a gift shop. Blanton was an avid reader and he enjoyed watching college football. It was his express desire to be cremated and have his ashes scattered, and he said he would come back and haunt us if we held a memorial service for him. He will be greatly missed and live forever in our hearts. on May 18, 2012.3
