Charles was born Dec. 9, 1922 in Bound Brook, N.J., the son of Charles Van Pelt and Ada Grace Miller. On Dec. 9, 1946 he married Joan F. Smith, who preceded him in death on July 22, 2005. Bud attended Rutgers, Central Michigan University and Michigan State University. He served his country during World War II as a combat photographer in the Army Air Corps. Bud served in many places, including Tinian and India, and was awarded the Air Medal for his service. Bud once had a notable commanding officer while stationed in Hollywood. That officer was Ronald Reagan. In 1988, the former Sergeant Van Pelt was awarded air force wings from Taipai, China for personal and professional achievements in military aviation. After his honorable discharge, Bud and Joan moved to Leelanau County and became very active in the Northport community. He was a fruit grower from 1946 until his passing. Bud was active with the Northport Pilot's Association and the Northport Woosley Airport Fly-In. He was a member of the Northport Masonic Lodge, No. 265. Bud was also an avid antique car collector. His pride and joy was a 1956 Oldsmobile Convertible Sleeping Bear dunemobile.Bud is survived by his son, Thomas (Deb) Van Pelt of Northport; two granddaughters, Sarah Murphy of Wyoming, and Rebecca Van Pelt of Anchorage, Alaska. He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Pearl Apgar; and a daughter, Thearla Van Pelt in 1974. Services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Leelanau Township Fire Department and/or the Northport EMS; both mailing address at: PO Box 338, Northport, MI, 49670. Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.

He served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea and owned and operated Harold's Lawn and Garden and co-owned and operated Pat's Kountry Chicken with his wife, Pat for 14 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Sheldon, MO; the Neosho Shrine Club and Abou Ben Adhem Shrine in Springfield, MO. Harold and Patricia June ‘Pat' Rogers were married on Sept. 15, 1952 in Nevada, MO and she preceded him in death on April 27, 2012. He is survived by a son and daughter in law, Kevin and Debbie McClellan, Neosho; a daughter and son in law, Charlene and Mike Johnson, Miami, OK; a brother and sisters in law, Fred and Mary McClellan, Flint, MI; six grandchildren, Ronnie Quintana, Crystal Quintana, Kimberly and Robert Neill, Chris and Natalie Johnson, Travis McClellan and Walker McClellan and two great grandchildren, Ethan Merino and Anistyn Murdock. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Dean McClellan and Gary Keith McClellan.5 He was born on March 28, 1928 at Milo, Vernon Co., Missouri.6,5 He married Patricia June "Pat" Rogers on September 15, 1952 at Nevada, Vernon Co., Missouri.5,7 Harold E.
