His Social Security Number was 195-28-8346.3 Charles Quiggle Simcox Jr. was buried at Jersey Shore Cemetery, 1103 Locust Street, Jersey Shore, Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania.6 His name was legally changed to Dr. Charles Curtis Sundin.7,6,8 He married Amy Claudine Bulgin.6 Charles Quiggle Simcox Jr. was born on September 7, 1937 at Albany, Albany Co., New York.2,7,9 He and Elizabeth S. Unknown were divorced on June 15, 1983 at San Bernardino Co., California.4 Charles Quiggle Simcox Jr. died on April 4, 1990 at Thousand Palms, Riverside Co., California, at age 52.3,7,9,10 He CATHEDRAL CITY - A Palo Verde Community College dean and a Palm Springs police secretary were among the four killed Wednesday on Interstate 10. Dead in the two-car collision are Charles Sundin, 48, dean of the Palo Verde Community College District; his wife, Amy Claudine Sundin, 44, and their son, David Curtis Sundin, 2, all Blythe residents, and Karen Lindberg, 46, of Palm Springs, a secretary in the police department investigation bureau. Donavan Rice, California Highway Patrol public affairs officer, said Lindberg was driving west on Interstate 10 at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday when for unknown reasons she probably jerked her car to the left. The sudden move, the officer said, caused Lindberg's car to skid sideways across the westbound lanes and center divider into the path of oncoming eastbound traffic. Charles Sundin's car was traveling east on the freeway when the Lindberg vehicle skidded into his path. The officer said Sundin's car apparently struck Lindberg's car on the driver's side door. The wreckage of both cars was found by officers in the eastbound lanes of I-10. Lindberg's car was facing north. The accident occurred 1 1/2 miles, west of Ramon Road. Both vehicles were traveling about 70 mph at the time of the accident, the officer said. All victims had to be cut from the tangled wreckage of the cars by Riverside County Fire Department rescue crews. The Sundin family was pronounced dead at the scene. Lindberg, was taken to Desert Hospital, in Palm Springs where she was pronounced dead. Sundin was hired at Palo Verde College in August 1987 as a teacher of speech, English and literature. Thursday the college flag was flying at half-staff in memory of the Sundin family, said Wilford Beumel, superintendent/president of the college. Sundin was also the college's vocational educational coordinator when first hired. He was made acting dean early in 1988 and dean about 1 1/2 years ago. The college president said both the faculty and students who knew Sundin "are coping pretty well." "I told them I didn't want to close the college today. He was extremely well liked among both the students and faculty," the president said, "but with grief sometimes I think it is better to just try to go on." "Sundin was quiet and had a very-good sense of humor. He was a very kind-hearted individual and extremely professional," Beumel said. Buemel said he learned about the fatal accident about 4 a.m. Thursday and drove over to inform the victim's survivors. Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of family members, he said. Before coming to work at Blythe. Sundin had taught at Lock Haven State College in Lock Haven, Pa., and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. His previous employment included a stint as a vocational administrator, and teacher at Crafton Hills Community College in Yucaipa. Sundin was hired at Palo Verde after the college advertised for a dean. While he did not get the job immediately, Beumel said Sundin was such a good candidate the school devised a plan to bring him on campus as a faculty member and vocational education coordinator. At the time of the fatal accident, Sundin was returning home after attending a vocational educational conference in San Francisco. As a dean, Sundin was in charge of recommending the hiring of full and part-time faculty and worked on curriculum programs. His wife would occasionally assist in projects at the college, such, as designing brochures. "He was a tremendous team player and we enjoyed working together and it is going to be very hard to replace him personally and as well as on a professional basis," Beunel said. Charles and Amy Sundin's survivors include a daughter, Amy, 12, who resided with her parents in Blythe, but was not on the trip. Other children from the couple's previous marriages are en route to Blythe. Family friends said, Lindberg, who was single, was born in Montebello and lived in Palm Springs since June, 1975, a pohce spokesman said. She had a master's degree from California State University, Long Beach. Previous employment in the Coachella Valley included work as an assistant personnel director at Saks Fifth Avenue and a teacher at Raymond Cree Middle School in Palm Springs. Hired by the Palm Springs police on Nov 7, 1988, she worked as a secretary for the investigation division. The job entailed handling, detailed and confidential reports. "She was really nice, quiet and she went out of her way to be helpful," said a co-worker, Leesa Simanton, a police services assistant. "She always used to work overtime and kept busy." Joe Herlihy, a secretary in the departments traffic investigation division, remembered Lindberg as "a very hardworking secretary and very loyal to her job." "She enjoyed her job working, at the police department. She had been a school teacher some years before in home economics. She was a very quiet girl but one who also verv kind and generous." Herlihy said. Funeral arrangements for all victims are pending. on April 6, 1990.10 He A funeral service for a Blythe family killed in a traffic accident in Thousand Palms is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Blythe Seventh-day Adventist Church. Charles Curtis Sundin, 52, Amy Curtis Sundin, 44, and David Curtis Sundin, 2, were killed in the Wednesday night accident on Interstate 10. A native of Albany, N.Y., Mr. Sundin was the dean of education for Palo Verde Community College in Blythe and had a doctoral degree in occupational education. The Sundins were members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Blythe. Mrs. Sundin was a native of Rawlins, Wyo, and David was born in Williamsport, Pa. Charles Sundin is survived by three children: Elizabeth Simcox of Los Angeles, Sean Simcox of Los Angeles, and Kristian Shea of Redlands. Mrs. Sundin is survived by four children: Dirk Spaulding of Colton, Schanda Vega of Loma Linda, Renea Spaulding of Redlands and Amy Lou Sundin of Blythe; her mother, Marvel Brown of Prescott Valley, Ariz; and two sisters, Udeli Fresk of Kirkland, Wash., and Marilyn Roderick of Redlands.
