Charles Thomas Layman Two Veedersburg men were electrocuted and another Veedersburg man was burned severely Thursday morning when they came in contact with a power line while installing an electric pump at the Byron Myers farm six miles south of here. Killed in the accident were Charles Laymen, 36, an employee of the plumbing department of the Fountain County Farm Bureau Co-Op, and Myron Myers, 29, whose farm the mishap occurred. The injured man was Asa Oblinger, 65, an employee of the plumbing department of the Farm Bureau Co-Op. He suffered shock and burns about the hands. The three men were placing a 40-foot pipe in a driven well when the accident occurred, the pipe caught by a strong wind, was blown against both wires of the power line, which was about 18 feet in rear of the spot where the men were working. Layman and Myers, who were standing on the ground, were killed instantly. Fountain County Coroner, Charles Fishero, who investigated said Oblinger probably owed his life to the fact that he was standing in a wooden platform. He was treated by two Veedersburg physicians, who assisted Coroner Fishero in the investigation. Funeral services for Layman will be conducted Saturday at 2:20 pm (CDT) at the Sterling church. Prayer services for the family will be conducted at 1 pm (CDT). The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30 to 2:30 pm (CDT). Burial will be in Rockfield Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Veedersburg post of the American Legion. Layman was a Navy veteran of World War II. Friends may pay their respects at the family residence in Sterling. Services for Myers will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 pm (CDT) at the Scotts Prarie Christian church by Rev. C.E. Smith. A prayer service for the family will be conducted at 1 pm (CDT) at the Fishero funeral home. The body will lie in state at the church for an hour preceeding the rites. Burial will be in Bonebrake Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the Fishero funeral home. Mr. Layman, a native of Veedersburg, was the son of Jess and Clenna Smith Layman. He married Marian Booard. Survivors are the widow; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Trucano, of Frankfort and Mrs. Grace Teague, of New Market, and a brother, Dan Layman, of Veedersburg. Mary Louise Schade1,2,3
F, b. July 23, 1927, d. February 16, 2014
Mary Louise Schade Mary Louise Schade Perry Smith, 86, passed away at the East Ward Assisted Living in Safford on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014. Louise was born July 23, 1927, at the old Clifton Hospital, along the banks of the San Francisco River in Clifton. She attended Clifton Schools, graduating from high school in 1945. Louise was the fourth of five children born to Karl Michael Schade and Elsa Lemnitz Schade. Louise’s father and mother emigrated from Germany and relocated to the “boomtown” of Clifton at the beginning of the 19th century. She was the last of the original Schade family from Clifton. Louise grew up in the Coca-Cola Bottling business, as her father was able to acquire a Coca-Cola franchise and they bottled for many years in Clifton. She attended the University of Arizona and Arizona State University after high school. On March 2, 1948, Louise married William S. “Ace” Perry, in Phoenix, and they moved to Needles, Calif., and resided with Ace’s family. Ace went to Barstow, Calif., and obtained work as a brakeman with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Together they lived in a mobile home park for a few months until they were able to save up enough money to find a furnished apartment. A few months later, Ace was offered a job working with the Greenlee County Assessor’s Office and they returned back to Clifton. Louise became a secretary for the Greenlee County Attorney and later worked with Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation for a number of years in the supply department and the engineering department. Ace went back to school at Lamson Business College in Phoenix, on the G.I. Bill, as Louise remained in Morenci. Following his classes at Lamson, Ace was able to obtain work with Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation at the Morenci Hospital as a bookkeeper. Together Louise and Ace had three boys, William S. Perry III, Ronald Alan Perry and Stephen Douglas Perry. Louise and Ace were married for 26 years, making their residence in Morenci, until Ace passed away from a heart attack at the age of 50, at the Morenci Hospital, in October of 1974. Louise continued her employment as a secretary for Phelps Dodge, becoming the General Manager’s secretary. Since the late 1940s Louise belonged to multiple bridge clubs in Graham and Greenlee counties and she served as the president of the Women’s Golf Association. Louise retired early from Phelps Dodge in May of 1985 and married a family friend, Emmit Smith, in a quiet ceremony on May 1, 1985. Together, Louise and Emmit resided in York Valley for a few years and then later relocated to Safford. They lived in Safford and met new friends until Emmit’s health began to fail and he passed away in February 2003. Louise remained a widow until she began showing signs of dementia and had to be cared for at the J&B Nursing Home and the East Ward Assisted Living. She received good care at both facilities and quietly passed away Sunday evening, Feb. 16, 2014, at the East Ward Assisted Living in Safford, with her loving family at her bedside. The family would like to acknowledge Barbara Rose and her son, Rod, for their care of Louise; and Stephenie Quintana, Kellyn Solis, Laura Crandell and all of the fine ladies at the East Ward Assisted Living for their kind and gentle care of Louise. The family would also like to thank Margaret Schade and Dr. Robbin MacDonald.3 She was born on July 23, 1927 at Clifton, Greenlee Co., Arizona.2,3 As of May 1, 1985,her married name was Smith.1 She married Emmit Stanley Smith, son of Guy S.
