He saw action days before The Battle Of The Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was born February 20, 1924. His parents were Thomas Alfred and Mary Ollie Blackwell Yeatts. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Joe Paul Yeatts, Thomas Lewis Yeatts, Dr. Silas Terry Yeatts, James Cook Yeatts, Thomas Alfred Yeatts Jr. and Edwin Lee (Ed) Yeatts; six sisters, Estella Yeatts Whitlock, Ruby Bell Yeatts, Mary Ester (Mae) Hester, Annie Pearl Graham, Cella Wade and Ethel Smith; one sister-in-law, Helen K. Yeatts. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Lottie Hurt. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, Va., with the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery with military graveside rites by Floyd VFW Post #7854 and American Legion Post # 127. Mr. Hester, an Army veteran of World War II, was born in Munsfordville, Ky., and came to this area in 1945. He attended Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky. He was a past president of the New Smyrna Beach Board of Realtors and the Committee of 100. Mr. Hester was twice named Realtor of the Year, was a director of the First Federal Savings and Loan and served on the first Planning Board for New Smyrna Beach. He was a member of the New Smyrna Beach Golf Association and served on its advisory board and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge. Mrs. Hester was born in Autryville, N.C., and came here in 1949. A teacher in North Carolina, she also taught at the Faulkner Street School in New Smyrna Beach and at Edgewater Public School. She also served as principal of the Faulkner Street School. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Hester attended Western North Carolina State College and Wake Forest College. Survivors include her husband, Raymond; two stepsons, Raymond Hester, New Smyrna Beach, and Fred Mathews, Asheville, N.C; two stepdaughters, Gayle Lowry, Ocala, and Beverly Haverstock, Louisville, Ky; nine stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren. on April 19, 2004.³
