Ronald Dale "Ron" Spangler On March 16, 2012, after a year-long battle with leukemia, Ron went home into the waiting arms of Jesus. Ron was born August 16, 1931, in Diamond, West Virginia, and spent his childhood in Witcher Creek, Kanawha County, WV. He first came to Brevard in 1951 as a young airman assigned to Patrick AFB as a flight engineer on B-17s and B-29s assigned to patrol the newly created Eastern Test Range. He enjoyed flying and traveling throughout the islands as part of his flight crew duties. Upon discharge from the U.S. Air Force, he returned home to West Virginia for a brief time, but his familiarity with Brevard County and a budding space program would bring him back in 1959, as a missile mechanic. Ron was a veteran of every manned space program from its inception, starting with Project Mercury and continuing through the Space Shuttle program, until his retirement in 1996. Ron worked with Convair/GDA on Project Mercury, McDonnell Aerospace Project Gemini, North American Rockwell Project Apollo, McDonnell Douglas Skylab, and finally Rockwell International/Lockheed the Space Shuttle.
