Robert Jinkins "Bob" Cooper1,2,3

M, b. March 8, 1858, d. 1928
Robert Jinkins "Bob" Cooper was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery, 1541 W. Belmont Avenue, Fresno, Fresno Co., California.4 He ROBERT J. COOPER A well known and highly respected pioneer resident of the Selma section of Fresno County is Robert Jinkens Cooper, popularly known as "Bob" Cooper. He came to this locality in November, 1875, when the land was little more than a desert waste, and with his own hands and team he assisted in digging the Centerville and Kingsburg ditch, more as an experiment, but which later proved the making of this section of the county. It is to such men that the county owes a debt of gratitude for making it "blossom as the rose." Bob Cooper was born in Calaveras County, March 8, 1858, a son of Robert Bruce Cooper, born in Mississippi in 1822, who when he was eighteen went to Texas and farmed in Harrison County several seasons, after which he came to California in 1850 and followed mining for a few years. He took up a homestead near Milton, Calaveras County, and lived there until 1889, when he moved to Fresno County and lived with his children until he moved to Santa Cruz. He married Miss Alta Zara Lewis, also born in Mississippi but reared in Arkansas. They had five children: Samuel B., a rancher near Del Rey ; Joseph H., a rancher at Selma; Mary, married Frank Cleary who died at Lindsav; Robert J., of this review; and Henry E., residing in Academy district. Mrs. Cooper died in 1872, in Calaveras County. Mr. Cooper spent his last days at Lindsay, dying at the age of ninety-one, in 1915. They were a fine pioneer couple and endured the privations of the early settlers. Mr. Cooper came from Texas, with saddle and pack mules, as far as Mazatlan, thence by boat to San Francisco, while Mrs. Cooper spent six months on the plains, making the journey from Mississippi with ox teams over the Santa Fe trail. Bob Cooper is a native son and as such takes a pride in the welfare of the people and in the development of the country in general. His education was obtained in the public schools of the state and his early training was along agricultural lines. He came to Fresno County in 1875, looking for a favorable location, and at that time bought forty acres of land where he now lives and upon which he has spent his time and attention in bringing to a high state of development. He has been a hard worker and is a good manager. As one of the pioneers he has shown how to succeed in cultivating the desert lands. Selma was not known and the nearest station and switch was at Kingsburg on the south and at Fowler on the north. There were three of the Cooper boys who settled in Fresno County and took up homesteads or bought railroad land in 1876. Samuel Bob and Joseph, and all of them have made good by their wise investments. The Kingsburg and Centerville ditch proved a success and made it possible to grow the peach and raisin grape in this section. This was the first successful irrigation system in this part of the county. In 1883, on the day before Christmas, at Visalia, R. J. Cooper and Miss Kate L. Mann, were united in marriage. Mrs. Cooper was born in the San Ramon Valley, Contra Costa County, on February 19, 1864, a daughter of Elson Mann, born in Indiana and a pioneer of California of 1849, in which year he crossed the plains and made settlement in what is now San Benito County, and later lived in Tulare County until 1896, when he came to Fresno County. He spent five years here and then moved to Santa Rosa. He served in the Mexican War under Colonel Doniphan. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper endeared themselves to their many friends by their many acts of kindness and by their integrity. Mrs. Cooper died on April 15, 1919. mourned by a wide circle of friends by whom she was held in the highest esteem for her generosity, genial disposition and Christian character. Mr. Cooper is a member of Selma Parlor, No. 107, N. S. G. W. and has passed all the chairs of the lodge. He is a Republican.3 He was born on March 8, 1858 at Calaveras Co., California.1,3 He married Kate Leola "Katie" Mann, daughter of Elison Moore "Elson" Mann and Harriet/Harriett Virginia "Pink" Harris, on December 24, 1883 at Tulare Co., California.3 Robert Jinkins "Bob" Cooper died in 1928 at Fresno Co., California.4

Roy led a full, colorful, honest and hardworking life. In his youth he was a stealthy trout fisherman, near scratch golfer and a survivor of World War ll combat in Belgium and Germany, where he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. A faithful patron and later employee of the Music Box and Red Barn Supper Club, Roy was a devoted son to Roy, Sr. and Mary Eades as well as Vice President for 17 years in the family business, the former Majestic Laundry in Princeton. He also served the West Virginia ABC Commission for 18 years, and was known to provide refreshments to Count Bassie and the Woody Herman Young Thundering Herd among others. Roy was a little league coach, champion of the underdog, Mountaineer fan through thick and thin, and father of three college graduates. In addition to his love of music and filling endless dance cards, Roy was wild about his many pets and especially his last dog Max. Roy was also a craftsman and master gardener. He loved nothing more than his wife Jane, son Roy Edward, lll and daughter-in-law Lorian of Walkertown, N.C., son Richard of Boston, Mass., daughter, Janie Meadows and grandson Brady Meadows of Athens and his extended family including the Goodall clan, the Snidow clan of Black Oak Mountain and Florida, and the limitless friends and family who shared time with Roy and Jane in their Princeton and Athens homes. Roy was born October 12, 1919 in Roanoke, Va. and was preceded in death by his parents, brother Louis, and sister Mary Eades Goodall. In honoring Roy's wishes, the family will forego services and toast a life well lived on Sunday, November 12, 2006, between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., at the Eades home, 307 South State St., Athens, WV. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to visit Jane at Phillips Care Home in Lerona, where Roy will be sadly missed and where his devotion set the standard since Jane fell seriously ill in 1999. Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton is in charge of arrangements. on November 11, 2006.4

Audrey Jane Funk1,2,3

F, b. January 9, 1927, d. July 19, 2011
Audrey Jane Funk Audrey Jane Eades - Jane Eades passed on July 19, 2011, after a long illness. She was born Audrey Jane Funk to Lemuel Talmage and Velma Moore Funk January 9, 1927. After a childhood in McDowell County coal camps of Vivian, Eckmann, Round Bottom and Switchback, her family relocated to Athens and Jane graduated from Princeton High School in 1943 at age 16. By age 19 she graduated from Concord College and began a 38-year teaching career. She taught at Big Creek High School for 1 year before she joined Graham High School for 37 years as a beloved biology teacher. In 1968, she was honored as Virginia State Science Teacher of the Year by NASA, primarily for bringing genetics curriculum into the classroom. Jane engaged in garden clubs, assisted her father’s business in bookkeeping, and loved travel and hosting family and friends. In 1950, she married Roy Eades Jr, the love of her life, after which they shared 56 years of colorful marriage. She encouraged her children in all things educational and health related, from science fairs to swimming, piano to dance, sports to church choirs, theatre to scouting and many cherished visits to family. Indicative of her giving nature, Jane visited Veteran Hospital patients at holidays for decades after her father’s passing. She worked election polls. She also championed scholarships in community chairperson roles through the honorary teaching sorority Delta Kappa Gamma. Jane served the Order of Eastern Star, Athens Chapter #33 as Worthy Matron and as the West Virginia Grand Representative in 1995. Jane was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Princeton before the family moved to Athens in 1969, after which she actively served Concord United Methodist Church and the Rachel Myers Circle. Jane’s husband, Roy Eades Jr, preceded her in death, as did her sister, Betty Funk Snidow, and a beloved niece Jane Ann (Snidow) Toppino. Her memory continues with the family she dearly loved, son Roy Edward Eades III and wife Lorian of Walkertown, NC, son Richard Eades of Lindside, daughter Janie Meadows, grandson Brady Meadows of Athens, and many special nieces and nephews. The extended family knew her well as she frequently engaged the Goodall, Prilliman, Hundley, Snidow and Diaz clans. She was blessed by friendship, counting Gertie Snidow, Dorothy Sutton, Elizabeth Noble, Bobbie Klingensmith, Betty Ireson, Nita Hill, Roseanne Goddard, Catherine Dunn, Sara Belcher, Nancy Belcher, Almeda Pettrey, and Thelma Compton among her most cherished friends. Beverly Phillips, Minnie Lester and the many care providers at Phillips Care Home became extended family over the nearly 12 years that they provided love and care to Jane.3 She was born on January 9, 1927 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2 As of April 22, 1950,her married name was Eades.1 She married Roy Edward Eades Jr., son of Roy Edward Eades Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Turner, on April 22, 1950 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,3 Audrey Jane Funk died on July 19, 2011 at Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 84.3
