Mr. Kiszka was born, raised and went to school in the Oak Hill, Va., area. After graduating from high school he served in the U.S. Army. He married Joyce Summerfield on Aug. 1, 1947, and worked in the coal mines until 1961. Mr. Kiszka moved his family to Grants and worked at the Kerr-McGee mines for 25 years before working at Chevron until it closed down and he retired. He was a lifetime member of the Moose Club in Virginia, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Elks Club and a member of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Grants. He donated many hours of service to these organizations and even found a little time for his favorite hobby, fishing. He was well known, loved and will be missed by many. Mr. Kiszka is survived by his wife of 57 years Joyce J. Kiszka of the family home in Grants; his four daughters Theresa Summer and husband Jim of Odessa, Texas, Lillian Gallegos and husband Albino of Grants, Nina Pratz and husband Gary of Albuquerque and Norma Smart and husband John of Kennedy, Texas; his sister Mary Kiszka of Carlisle, W. Va; six grandchildren Josh Summer and wife Leanne, Tamara Gallegos, Amanda Gonzales and husband Abie, Jordan Pratz, Jason Pratz and Lori Caha and husband Stan; five great-grandchildren Mackenzie Summer, Zoe Summer, Stephanie Leal, Hanna Leal and Joseph Worthen; his two Godsons Phil Deef and Ernest Tafoya and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Sebastian Kiszka and Antonina Glenka Kiszka, 11 brothers and sisters and grandson Jeremy Worthen. A Rosary was recited on Thursday, Feb. 10, at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Grants. Funeral Mass will take place today, Friday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with Father Matthew Keller officiating. Interment of cremated remains and graveside services will follow at Grants Memorial Park. A reception will be held following the graveside services at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Grants. Grants Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements. on February 11, 2005.3

"Sarge" Manning, 90, of Crab Orchard, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011, in the Beckley Veterans Area Medical Center. Born September 11, 1921, in Matoaka, WV, he was the son of the late Howard and Nancy Marshall Manning. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Fink Manning; sister, Willie Cox; brother, Edward Manning; sister, Virginia Carman; and brother, Okey Manning. Sarge spent 30 years in active duty in the U.S. Army. He was an ordained minister, a 32nd Degree Mason, charter member of the Crab Orchard-MacArthur Lions Club, lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion, a former county commissioner, and Raleigh County's best known Santa Claus. For over 40 winters one of his greatest joys was building a tubing slope behind his home, providing hot chocolate, a warm fire and a clean family atmosphere for thousands of youngsters and their families. He served with the Army's Chaplain Corps and with the 82nd, 11th and 101st airborne divisions. He was in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater — the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan during World War II. After the war, he was in the standby Reserves for 14 months, then he re-enlisted and went into the airborne division at Fort Bragg, N.C. In 1956, after Korea, he became an Army recruiter in West Virginia. He spearheaded efforts to move the old Methodist church at Pemberton to the coal camp community at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. Howard was licensed as a minister in 1952, and in 1967 he was ordained as a minister of the gospel in the West View Missionary Baptist Church. He pastored churches and led evangelistic outreach work, and was a lifelong member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church. Survivors include sons, Kenneth Lee Manning of Sophia, Billy Joe Manning and wife Debby of Fairfield, Maine, Dan Manning and wife Janet Lynn of Ellicott City, MD; daughters, Sherry Smith and husband Bruce of Mabscott, Susie Fritz and husband Bill, of Crab Orchard, with whom he made his home, 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Manning and wife Geneva of Beckley, Melvin Manning and wife Marcella of Dothan, WV, Donald Manning of Murfreesboro, TN, Virgil Manning of MacArthur, WV, Ross Manning of Elyria, OH; sisters, Helen Preast and husband Robert of Athens, OH, Jean Blevins of Harrisburg, WV; special caregivers, Ann Honaker and Janet McNeel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Sisson and Jerry Manning officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to service on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Berman Cornett, Dean Beckett, Tim Rector, and grandsons. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Crab Orchard Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 466, Crab Orchard, WV 25827. on October 3, 2011.2

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Dwight Green and Joe Pizzino officiating. Burial will be in the Furrow Family Cemetery at Shady Spring. Friends may call today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley and at the church one hour prior to services. Pallbearers will be David and Mark Furrow, Robert Slate, Michael Rash, Roosevelt Rich, and Barry Cox. on February 7, 1986.2

He received his reward and is no longer in pain. Waiting to greet him in Heaven were his father and mother, Floyd and Myrtle Furrow, his brother Estel, and his sisters, Erma Lee and Ethel Mae, his son, Danny Ray, and his long-time friend, Roosevelt Rich. Those who remain hold fast to the promise that we will see him again one day his wife of sixty-six years, Anna Lou Salyards Furrow; his five daughters and their spouses, Vickey Cox and husband, Barry, of Shady Spring, Cathy Hunt and husband, David, of Glen Jean, Donna Whitt and husband, Mark, of Shady Spring, Lou Ann Lilly and husband, Dewey, of Shady Spring, and Connie Glaize and husband, Ken, of Forest, Virginia. His six grandchildren, Melanie Persinger, Jason Cox, Heidi Wood, Brandon Lilly, Jamie Lilly and Austin Glaize; six great grandchildren, Jennifer, Lauren, Kaitlynn, Hailey, Taylor and Leah; and one great-great grandchild, Bentley, due in January, 2017. Many cousins and friends also survive. Mr. Furrow was a Raleigh County School bus driver for twenty-five years, never missing a day of work or having an accident during that period of time. He was fondly called "Fearless Furrow" because no matter how deep the snow, he chained up the bus and went on. He was especially proud of the farm that God had entrusted to him and his family for six generations. He was a good steward of his farm. Mr. Furrow was named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1962, was the Soil Conservation Farmer of Year, and was a member of Blue Jay United Methodist Church. Mr. Furrow was a good Christian man of few words, who lived his life by example. A message to their father from his five girls, "Well done daddy." Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Monday, December 12, 2016, at 1 PM with Rev. David Altizer and Rev. John Hart officiating. Burial will follow at Furrow Family Cemetery at Shady Spring, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6 PM until 9 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. on December 9, 2016.2

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Allen Furrow. Survivors include his wife, June Weaver Furrow; sons, Charles Furrow and wife, June, of Glen Allen, Va., and David Furrow and wife, Jean, of Brooksville, Fla; daughters, Carla Keffer and husband, Kenny, of Shady Spring, Sue Brakefield and husband, Dee, of Coal City, Frances Ramsey and husband, Tex, of Oak Hill and Linda Fox and husband, Ernie, of Calvin; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Emell Furrow and wife, Anna Lou, of Shady Spring; and sisters, Erma Slate of Crab Orchard and Ethel Mae Rash of Olin, N.C. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Hospice health care givers, with special thanks to Darlene. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Delvin D. Elwell Jr., the Rev. Phillip Farrington and Mr. Charles Furrow officiating. In addition to her parents, Erma is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Robert "Bob" Slate Sr; and one brother, Estel W. Furrow. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Robert W. Slate Jr. and wife Mable of MacArthur, W.Va; daughters, Barbara Hensley and husband Chuck of Cool Ridge, Bonnie Baginski of Cleveland, Ohio and Beverly Acord and husband Frank of Maple Fork, W.Va; sister, Ethel Mae Rash of Olin, N.C; brother, Emil Furrow of Shady Spring, W.Va; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; caregivers Darlene Plumley, Cookie Pauley and Sharon Arnold. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Rev. Wayne Holder and Rev. Thomas Shepard officiating.
