Ward Beecher Holloway1,2,3

M, b. January 6, 1865, d. January 1, 1909
Ward Beecher Holloway was buried at Highland Cemetery, 6th and N. Fairview Streets, Lock Haven, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania.1 He was born on January 6, 1865 at Nittany Hall, Centre Co., Pennsylvania.1,4 He married Kathleen S. "Kate" Chatham, daughter of John H. Chatham and Priscilla Jane Welsh, on July 21, 1884.1,2,3 Ward Beecher Holloway "Every keg and bottle bears a $1,000 guarantee of absolute purity." These words constitute the trade mark of the Harvard Brewing Company, of Lowell, Mass, of which W. B. Holloway is General Manager and Treasurer. Perhaps no more enterprising or successful business man can be pointed to than Mr. Holloway, so well and favorably known to the people of this community. He was born in Nittany Hall, Centre County, January 6, 1865, the son of a well known and prominent physician. Early in life the subject of this sketch was taken by his parents to Akron Ohio, where he lived until their death in 1878. He received the advantages afforded by the public schools, and later took a course at Oberlin College, following this, with a practical commercial training at the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Business College. In 1882 he studied pharmacy and receiving practical training in that profession in the drug store of Charles Merk, of this city. Success attending his efforts Mr. Holloway in 1883 married Miss Kathleen Chatham, of Lock Haven. This union was blessed by two daughters now 12 and 14 years old, both of whom were born in Pennsylvania. In 1885 he entered into the bottling business at Lock Haven and Williamsport, and, while engaged in this enterprise was a resident of this city for four years. In 1890 he assumed'the general agency for the New England States of the Rochester Brewing Company and, built up for this establishment a large and lucrative business. In 1898 he severed his connection with the Rochester syndicate of brewers and became interested in the Harvard brewery with Mr. John Joyce, a new York, Boston, and Montreal capitalist, who is president of the company, and has, in addition, extensive interestes in Canada and elsewhere. Mr. Joyce occipies a high place in the business field, and a more genial, wholtesouled or justly popular man never lived to merit the full measure of success that he has attained. In addition to his other interests Mr. Holloway is secretary of the New Era Carbonator Company, manufactuiers of carbonating machinery in Boston and London, England, and he is also Secretary and treasurer of the Santa Teresa Quicksilver Mining Company; San Jose, Cal., with main offices in Boston. Mr Holloway resides at Brookline, Mass, where he owns a beautiful and palatal $50,000 home, in which, his charming family, he despenses a most generous hospitality. The Harvard Brewing Company is capitalized at $1,000,000. It has a capacity of 350,000 barrells per annum, the output being larger than any similar concern in the New Enhland states. No beer is more favorably known than Harvard, and it the only malt product that goes to the consumer backed with a $1,000 guarantee of absolute purity. It is used extensively in the South as well as the North, and is shipped as far as Manila and Puerto Rico. In addition to this famous beer the company brews an ale no less noted for its superiority P. J. Enright, of this city, is the general representative of this company, with future residence in Boston. In these days when there is so much adulteration of the food and drink products it is a comfort to realize that there is at least one lager beer on the market that is backed by a one thousand dollar guarantee of purity. This is sufficient evidence to convince the most skeptical that pure beer can be obtained for the asking. The public owes a debt of gratitude to this company for aiding to drive out impure goods. on December 1, 1901.4 He died on January 1, 1909 at Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Co., California, at age 43.3 He W. B. Holloway Expires Suddenly in California. Death Occurred in Santa Barbara and Remains Will Be Brought Here. Information has reached this city announcing the death of W. B. Holloway, which occurred at Santa Barbara, Cal., on Monday, January 4, where he had gone hoping to be benefited in health. No particulars regarding the cause of death could be ascertained. He was aged about 44 years. W. Beecher Holloway was a resident of this city for a number of years and represented the Rochester Brewing company in Lock Haven and later moved to Williamsport. From the latter place he went to Boston and continued to look after the large interest of this company in that section. He was a man of wonderful energy and business ability and amassed a considerable fortune in a brief period. Some years ago he organized the Harvard Brewing company, whose modern plant was located near Boston and that company soon did a large volume of business. Mr. Holloway was one of the promoters of the company that manufactured the celebrated Gillette safety razors that are sold all over the world. In this section he had some business interest and was president of the Castanea Brick company, which was organized several years ago. He is survived by his wife, who prior to her marriage was Kathleene S. Chatham, daughter of John Chatham, and two daughters. Deceased is a nephew of Dr. L. M. Holloway, of Salona and C. M. Holloway, of this city. The remains will be brought to Lock Haven for interment, but the exact time cannot yet be ascertained. His wife and children were with him when the end came, but Mrs. Holloway is in such a physical condition at present that the attending physician advised her not to undertake the journey. on January 13, 1909.3
