She was preceded in death by her parents, Creed and Lovene Cook Bryant. She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Morin and two grandchildren of Michigan; three sisters, Betty Lilly of Salem, Mary Basham and husband, Bernie of West Virginia, Jane Whitfield and husband, Whorley of Tennessee; three brothers, Gene Bryant and wife, Edith of Salem, Billy Bryant and wife, Joyce of New Castle, and Lucky Bryant of Roanoke. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the Salem Rescue Squad for the kind services they gave Mrs. Gunter. Survivors include a son, Robert Carl McKinney and his wife, Gail, of Jupiter, Fla; three daughters, Rose Pruitt and Florine Lilly, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Patty Lilly and her husband, Bob, of Coal City; a sister, Bessie Graham of Sophia; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and Margaret Browning, who was her caregiver. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. on June 7, 2001.7

Mrs. Marion Jeynean Mooney, 41, of Josephine, indicted by a grand jury for murder, was permitted to stand on her present bond and is order to return for sentencing Feb. 1. Self-preservation was the motive in the shooting which occurred in a house in Egeria where the 47 year old husband, George, had forced their children to go, according to police reports. Mrs. Mooney told police and a local newspaper reporter her husband had frequently held a gun to her throat and on that day she shot him he was drunk, and threatened to shoot her. She said he had been drunk since the first of the month, cursed and threatened her and their four children who were at home, making then go to bed before dark. After he fell asleep Nov. 9, Mrs. Mooney said she took his loaded gun from the wall and shot him at close range without waking the children. She then walked to the nearest house to report the shooting to the police and call for an ambulance. Mrs. Mooney said their four older children had married and left home to get away from their father. Other witnesses interrogated by police substantiated Mrs. Mooney's statements. Norman Knapp is counsel for Mrs. Mooney. on January 25, 1972.9 She died on February 5, 2000 at Glennville, Tattnall Co., Georgia, at age 69.1,2 She Marion DeWeese Mooney Smith, 69, formerly of Sophia, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Glenville following a long illness. Born Oct. 13, 1930, in Affinity, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Sr. and Nettie Milam DeWeese. She was the mother of seven daughters, Linda Cornet of Georgia, Loretta Petrella of Georgia, Patty Mooney of Georgia, Christina Blevins of Pemberton, Pam Ashley of Georgia, Angie Cox of Georgia, and Nova Reid of Georgia; a son, Frankie Mooney of California; 26 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six brothers and five sisters. Graveside rites will be at Mooney Cemetery, Rhodell. on February 9, 2000.1

Mooney, 41, of Egeria, formerly of Josephine, waived to the action of the Raleigh County Grand Jury in an appearance before Town District Magistrate Joe Rodriguez Wednesday. She is in Raleigh County Jail, awaiting bond to be set by Criminal Court Judge Harry L. McCreery. Mrs. Mooney was charged by state police with murder of her husband, George W., 47, following a Tuesday night shooting at their farm home. Police said Mrs. Mooney shot and killed her husband at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday with a single blast in the head from a 12-guage shotgun. The murder was apparently the result of a quarrel. Mooney was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. His wife was lodged in the Raleigh County jail at 2:15 a.m. Mrs. Mooney had someone call the state police to report the shooting, according to a police spokesman. the Mooney family was apparently in the process of moving from Josephine to Egeria. The couple's four children, ages six to 11, were placed in Area 25 (Raleigh County) Department of Welfare Attention Home on Beckley Avenue. Mooney was born at Camp Creek, June 23, 1924. He was the son of Stinex Mooney of Odd and the late Mrs. Lorene Meadows Mooney. A disabled veteran serving three years in the U.S. Army during World War II, he attended the Odd Freewill Baptist Church. Additional survivors include a son, Franklin Mooney, at home; seven daughters, Mrs. Linda Cornet, and Mrs. Patti Hambrick, both of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Christine McCoy of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Loretta Valquez, of Miami, Fla., and Pam, Angela and Nova Mooney, all at home; two brothers, Ellis of Chicago, and Ray Mooney of Odd; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Snead of Ravencliff, Mrs. Josie Wilson of Chicago, and Mrs. Stacy Hylton of Odd, and three grandchildren. on November 11, 1971.2

Deweese at home; four brothers, Bill Deweese and wife, Sally, of Fairfax, Va., Kennith Deweese and wife, Mary, of Warren, Ohio, Lawrence DeWeese and wife, Janet, of Pemberton, and Paul Deweese and wife, Cherlyn, of Lawton, Okla; four sisters, Carol Staggs of Memphis, Tenn., Rita Boyles and husband, Bob, of Scott Depot, Jewel Deweese of China, and Judy Hylton and husband, Jim, of Midway; and five grandchildren. Deweese III and wife, Renee, of Durham, N.C., and William Deweese of Crab Orchard; four daughters, Peggy Jones and husband, Chip, of Moran, MI, Vicki Keene of Glen White, Paula Deweese and companion, Karl Miller, of Glen White, and Stacy Deweese and companion, Jonathan Pierce, of Glen White; five grandchildren, Jacob Andrew, Megan Renee, Stacy Marie, Autumn Estelle and Joshua Adam; and a great-grandson, Eric Clay. Other survivors include two brothers, George Hylton and wife, Claudette, of Buchannon, Ga., and James Hylton and wife, Judy, of Midway; and a sister, Janie Cochran and husband, Gordon, of Eccles. The Deweese family would like to give special thanks to the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hopsital Intensive Care, 3rd and 4th floors nursing staff, and the staff of Heartland Nursing Home. Burial will be in the Spruce Grove Cemetery at Basin. Graham died at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday in a local hospital after a long illness. Born March 6, 1897 in Basin, he was a son of the late Luke and Cindy McKinney Graham. Survivors include his wife, Bessie; seven sons, Lloyd of Midway, Perry and Paris, both of Akron, Ohio, Brady of Bethany, Okla., Willard of Roanoke, Va., Chester of Rising Sun, Md., and Matthew Jr. of New Castle, Del; four daughters, Mrs. Annie Ward of Canton, Ohio, Mrs. Effie Lemon of Massillon, Ohio, and Mrs. Betty Burns and Mrs. Versie Hyatt, both of Akron; a brother Jessie of Ghent; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Jane Lusk of Spanishburg, and Mrs. Becky Graham of Basin and 22 grandchildren. on October 5, 1974.6
