Doris Lea Hillbrant was buried at Highland Cemetery, Iola, Allen Co., Kansas.4,2 She Doris Lea Kessinger, 74, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008, at her home in Ozark, Missouri. Doris had fought a battle with cancer for the last six months. Her husband, Don, was constantly at her side. Doris was born April 28, 1933, in lola, the daughter of John and Edna (Heath) Hillbrant. Doris and Don were married for 55 happy years. They met shortly after Don returned from serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. A year later, on Aug. 31, 1952, they were married in the lola First Evangelical United Brethren Church by the Rev. Lyle Roe. Doris was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family. She was a loving wife, and mother to their only son, Miles, who they lost in an vehicle accident in 1987. Doris was a wonderful cook and loved her landscape and gardening. She started riding horses when she was 4 years old. She and Miles had 200 head of cattle until his untimely death. After this, the Kessingers spent many years traveling with their recreational vehicle. They spent a great amount of time in McAllen, Texas, but had their home near Waco, Texas, on the Brazos River. Doris's life was loved at the farm from the time she grew up. Everyone west of the Neosho River seemed to be her friend or relative. Each morning, she rose with a smile on her face, greeting the day with reverence for the opportunities that God sent along. Even in doing so, what some would consider unimportant, she held before her the Ultimate Purpose toward which she was working. She met life with a gleam in her eye, love in her heart and a determination to be simply good. If Doris could help somebody with a word, a song, a prayer, or her work, her living would not be in vain. She knew innately as Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "no matter how often defeated, you are born to victory. The reward of a thing well done, is to have done it." She spoke no ill of anyone, but saw only the value in all. She fought a gracious battle against the ravages of cancer. It was, as the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge expressed so fittingly, "How well she fell asleep! Like some proud river, widening toward the sea calmly and grandly, silently and deep. Life joined eternity." She was a great, quiet and caring person. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her son, Miles; her parents; and many relatives. Doris is survived by her husband, Don; his sister, Diana McCaustland of Manhattan, KS; her only brother, Donald Hillbrant of Iola, KS; three nieces from Diane and Bob McCausland; and many cousins. The memorial service will be conducted jointly by the Rev. Gene McIntosh and the Rev. Lloyd Houk on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola, KS. Burial will follow immediately after the service in the Highland Cemetery, Iola, KS.2 She was born on April 28, 1933 at Kansas.1,5,2,4 As of August 31, 1952,her married name was Kessinger.4 She married Don M. Kessinger on August 31, 1952 at Iola, Allen Co., Kansas.2,4 Doris Lea Hillbrant died on March 6, 2008 at Ozark Township, Christian Co., Missouri, at age 74.5,2,4
