Mrs. William T. (Peace) Hall of 2008 Jefferson St. was christened “Peace" on a suggestion from the Daily Telegraph in its Nov. 13, 1918 edition. That suggestion came after it was learned she was the first "liberty baby,” so-called for being born on the day and time the World War I armistice was reached. The announcement of her birth prompted a Telegraph editor to print a front-page item suggesting that the baby be named “Peace.” She was born at the old Bluefield Sanitarium. The Daily Telegraph, in a story published in November, 1918, said: “The first announcement of a liberty baby" has been given out. The little one is a girl and was born at Bluefield Sanitarium at ll o’clock Monday morning, the time hostilities in the world war ceased. Mr. and Mrs. Bowen Greever are the proud parents and they will have no trouble in after years in remembering the birthday of their daughter, the greatest day in the history of the world. The suggestion is made by the Daily Telegraph that the young lady be named “Peace.” The newspaper ran another story 20 years later, on the young lady’s birthday, recounting how a “tired old editor” suggested her name in 1918. She attended the public schools of Bluefield, and was a graduate of Marion College and a lifetime member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and secretary. Survivors: daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Nancy) Wiley of Princeton; sons, William Terry Hall Jr., of Raleigh, N.C., Jonathan O. Hall of Washington, D C., and H. Keith Hall of New York City, N.Y; brothers, Henry B. Greever of Middletown, Del; John W. Greever of Boca Raton, Fla; and six grandchildren. The family will have private burial services on Wednesday at Monte Vista Park Cemetery. on July 31, 1984.3
