The body will be removed Monday to the home from the Albert Myers and Sons mortuary at Elkview. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Ross Culpepper will officiate and burial will be in the Sand Run cemetery where the Masonic lodge will be in charge of services. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Freda Slack; a stepson, Harold Richard McCune; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Slack of Young's Bottom; eight sisters, Mrs. W. O. Given of Charleston, Mrs. Quentin Shafer of Huntington, Mrs. Charles Owen, Ruth, Tida, Opal, Eva and Nina Stack, all of Elkview; and a brother, John Slack of Elkview. on November 25, 1940.⁵

He was a graduate of William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia and was director of operations for Double Quick, Inc. for the last 16 years. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Emily Shafer of Indianola and two brothers, Thomas Shafer, M.D. and his wife Susan of Birmingham, AL and Robert Shafer and his wife Rose of Pensacola, FL. on August 30, 2011.⁵

Stowe.¹ George Richard "Dick" Hays was born on January 23, 1945 at Elkview, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.^1,2,3 He married Florence Ann Huffman on August 22, 1966 at Walgrove, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.³ George Richard "Dick" Hays died on November 23, 2017 at Cherokee Village West, Fulton Co., Arkansas, at age 72.^1,2 He George Richard "Dick" Hays, 72, of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, passed away at his home November 23, 2017, after a short illness. He was born January 23, 1945, in Elkview, West Virginia. Dick was a graduate of Clendenin High School and attended Concord College. He was proud to have served eight years in the United States Air Force in Vietnam. After his military service, he worked at Dupont in Belle, WV, and retired with 27 years of service. After retirement, he moved to Arkansas where he loved to fish. He worked for Safe Ride and Golden Transportation. Dick had a great love of sports, especially his Mountaineers and the Washington Redskins. Dick was a kind, caring and giving man. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Michelle; his parents, George Edward and Tida R. (Slack) Hays; a brother, Clifford R. Hays; and a brother-in-law, Fordyce Wyatt. Survivors include his wife, Cindy K. (Stowe) Hays; his sons, Jason (Joanne) of Elkview and David (Crystal) Hays of Charleston; his sister, Alice Wyatt of Ripley; his in-laws, Wes and Pat Stowe; along with nieces, a nephew and step children. Per his wishes, Dick will be cremated and there will not be a public service. on December 3, 2017.¹
