Smith, a football star in Akron in the 1920s and a former coach at several schools, died Saturday. He was 88. Mr. Smith played for the University of Akron in its first game against Kent State University in 1923 and led the Zips to a 32-0 victory. It also was Mr. Smith's first college game and as a 152-pound halfback, he scored three touchdowns for the Zips. Mr. Smith, who was an all-around athlete, went on to win eight varsity letters from the university, three each in football and track and two in basketball. He was a standout athlete at the old West High School in Akron, where the football team was city champion the four years he played. He was the captain his senior year. He had won 10 varsity letters in football, basketball and track at West High. Mr. Smith also had played semi-professional football in the Akron area and was a boxer. Before going to college, he served a stint in the Navy and won the Atlantic Coast 158-pound boxing championship. He had coached at Tallmadge, Wooster, Willoughby and Weirton, W. Va., high schools and had been an assistant football coach at the University of Akron. He also had served as principal of Tallmadge High. He was an insurance agent when he retired several years ago. He was a native of Bryant, Pa., near Pittsburgh, and came to Akron with his family In 1915. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Carol Black of Akron. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Velma, and his second wife, Ethel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Dunn-Quigley-Ciriello & Carr funeral home in Fairlawn, where friends may call an hour prior to services. Burial will be in Mount Peace cemetery. on November 19, 1990.3

LaBreche said investigators were able to identify Chatham through dental records. Joe Figueira, dean of research and graduate studies at Montana Tech, said Chatham held a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Idaho. He had been on the college’s research staff since 1993. Chatham was in charge of analytical services at Tech’s temporary lab at the Kelley Mine. on September 18, 1998.5

He was former band director of Lakeland High School, and the city auditorium in Lakeland was named in his honor. He moved to Fort Meade in 1957. Survivors include his widow Mrs. Dorthy Mayhall; his sister, Miss Esther Mayhall, and a brother, Leslie Mayhall, Amandale, Va. on July 22, 1965.4
