Brust, convicted for the slayings, had a petition for a stay of execution and a writ of habeas corpus pending before the State Supreme Court. Prison Sgt. John Moore, on his regular rounds, beamed his flashlight into Brust's cell at 5:30 a.m. and noticed blood on Brust's right cheek... on May 24, 1957.2
