As the descendent of Oregon pioneers, Larry lived his life with an innate sense of fearless pioneer spirit and adventure. He conquered the usual achievements: learned to hunt and fish in the hills of Oregon; learned to play baseball; graduated Lebanon High School in 1954; attended Eastern Oregon State College and graduated from Oregon College of Education in 1958. The greatness Larry achieved in his life, though, was in his steadfast commitment to his family and friends and in his service to others. Larry's professional service to others took the form of a science teaching career that spanned 33 years, touched thousands of lives, and brought him some of his most cherished and enduring friendships. He retired from Gresham High School in 1991 and began an even busier portion of his life still relying on that same fearless spirit to pursue new interests and to try just about anything. He played golf every chance he could, organized epic hunting trips with his best buddies, traveled the world, was a board member of the Mount Hood Repertory Theatre and performed in many productions himself, raised funds and was a board member for the Gresham Barlow Education Foundation, served as the director for the Multnomah Education Service District Academic AllStars Scholarship program and was a founding member of the Gresham Breakfast Lions. By far, Larry's proudest achievement was his family. Together with Juanita, his wife of 45 years, he raised and successfully launched into their own lives, three children, Lynn, Sally and Mike. He taught his children about the history and geology of Oregon, how to cast a fishing line, how to sing two-part harmony and how to be great parents, along with spouses, Steve, Dale and Shari, in raising their own children. Larry was absolutely thrilled to be a grandfather of six grandsons - Matthew, Paul, Andrew, Caleb, Nathan and Adam, as well as great granddaughter Haley - and excitedly celebrated every one of their accomplishments and supported their individual interests just as he had his own children's. She married Ralph McKern in June 1962; he preceded her in death in 1992. For many years, she was a cannery worker for Point Adams Packing Company in Newport. She was a volunteer with the Scio Senior Center. Survivors include her daughters, Alita J. Warriner of Scio and Geraldine Setzer of Lebanon; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Private family services took place at Eureka Cemetery in Newport. Bateman Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements. on July 21, 1999.¹
