M, b. June 6, 1927, d. April 8, 2008
Rev. George Lee Compton was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Boston, Halifax Co., Virginia.5 He was born on June 6, 1927 at Mecklenburg Co., Virginia.1,2,6,3 He married Frances Merrell Vaden, daughter of Clarence Thomas Vaden and Vivian Wilbourne/Wilborne, on December 11, 1948 at South Boston, Halifax Co., Virginia.1,2,5 Rev. George Lee Compton died on April 8, 2008 at Clarksville, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia, at age 80.6,4,5 He George Lee Compton, was living in Clarksville and working for a railroad when he felt called to the ministry in 1948. The Halifax native and former farm boy, who led independent Baptist churches in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana and Maryland, served until he retired in 2001. He died at age 80 on Tuesday in a Clarksville nursing home after suffering Alzheimer's Disease for a number of years. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston. Mr. Compton left the railroad to start a small ministry that met in a store building in Chase City, said a brother, Clarence Compton of Salisbury, N.C. He later began assisting the pastor of Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle in Clarksville in visiting the sick in his congregation. After attending a Bible college in Fort Worth, Texas, Mr. Compton started or led churches in Rock Hill, Henderson and New Bern, all in North Carolina. Returning to Virginia, he founded Bethel Baptist Missions in South Boston. "He would go to different churches and have missionary conferences. He traveled to Belize and to France," his brother said. Mr. Compton also helped prospective missionaries gain the support they needed for their missions. During the early 1960s, he organized and built Friendship Baptist Church in Hopewell. In the 1970s, under the auspices of Bethel Baptist Missions, he went to Reidsville, N.C., and started Malachi Boys Home, which served boys who had problems in their homes. The site on which the home sat was landlocked, his brother said. Owners of adjacent land that would give him access to a road sold him their property at a reduced rate with the stipulation that he pay off his $1 million loan within five years. At the end of that time, he also had to have the home built and occupied. "He paid off the loan in two and a half years and started the home with 10 boys," his brother said. Mr. Compton was the widower of Frances Vaden Compton, who died in 1999. Survivors in addition to his brother include a sister, Lillie Mae Atallah of Belton, Texas; and two other brothers, John Compton of Henderson, N.C., and Frank Compton of Mexia, Texas. on April 12, 2008.5
