Geraldine "Jeri" Dowdy1,2

F, b. January 30, 1929, d. February 14, 2015
Geraldine "Jeri" Dowdy was buried at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia.2 She was born on January 30, 1929.3 As of circa 1947,her married name was Toler.2 She married James Montgomery "Jim" Toler, son of Thomas Dickerson Toler and Gertrude Arrenia Bell, circa 1947.1,2 Geraldine "Jeri" Dowdy died on February 14, 2015 at Virginia at age 86.2 She Geraldine Dowdy (Jeri) Toler, 86, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with Jesus on Saturday, February 14, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Montgomery Toler (Jim) and her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Quinn Dowdy (Mamie); brothers, Robert Lee Dowdy, William Carlton Dowdy, and James Albert Dowdy; sisters, Virginia Dowdy Weaver and husband John, and Frances Dowdy Scott and husband Bob. She is survived by her sister, Rita Jo Dowdy Wood and husband Harry; daughters, Ginger Toler Smith and Tammy Toler Campbell and her husband Kirby; grandchildren, Rob Smith, Jami Weidmann and husband Greg, Aaron Smith, Katie Campbell and Tyler Campbell and wife Larissa; great-grandchildren, Meaghan Evans, Richie Evans, and Drew Weidmann. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1947, Jeri met and married Jim Toler ("A very special man--the most humble man I have ever known"). They had enjoyed 37 years of marriage before he passed away at the young age of 58. He was the owner and operator of Jamont Press, Inc. and wonderful husband, father and friend to many. On April 15, 1956, while attending a revival at Oakland Baptist Church with the Rev. Will Dibble, she gave her life to the Lord and spent most of her life loving and serving Him. Jeri was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She taught all of her grandchildren about Jesus and the Bible. She loved being active and serving in her church. She was a charter member of Grandin Court Baptist Church where she had many very close friends. Later she moved to Berean Baptist Church in Salem and started a ministry visiting and picking up little children, teaching them the books of the Bible and bringing them to Sunday School. She was affectionately known as "The Candy Lady" and she loved it (the name and the candy!) Her ministry grew so quickly that soon she needed a school bus to hold all the children. She also helped with the Senior Adult ministry and loved every minute of it. In addition, Jeri loved singing in the choir, sitting right behind her favorite preacher, Dr. Rudy Holland. After he moved to Sanford, N.C., she moved her membership to First Baptist Church where she also sang in the choir. She spent the last 12 years of her life at Pheasant Ridge Nursing & Rehab, trying to get back to her home and church. In 2010 she suffered a stroke and was never able to recover. She never once was bitter about her condition but consistently gave glory to God and looked forward to spending eternity with Him. The family wishes to thank the First Baptist Church Homebound Ministry, special friend Anita Trent, and other friends for all their many visits, gifts, cards and prayers. Heartfelt appreciation to the employees of Pheasant Ridge Nursing & Rehab for their love and care during her last days. PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN DATES DUE TO WEATHER: The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. The service will be conducted by Dr. Rudy Holland on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 2 p.m. A family burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. Flowers would be appreciated or donations may be made to the Rescue Mission of Roanoke, the First Baptist Church Homebound Ministry, or PRH Ministries (a Ministry in memory of Paul Holland, mailing address, 3310 Wycliff Ct, Sanford, NC 27330). on February 17, 2015.2
