A native of Richmond, Mr. Tatum graduated from Hermitage High School, where he was a member of the football team. To help earn money to play football, he started his first job as a newspaper carrier. Mr. Tatum, a gifted storyteller who could ad lib the humor, always made it a point to be involved in his children's lives. He coached youth football and baseball and served as a Cub Scout pack leader. More recently, he worked as the pit-crew chief of the No. 26 Tatum Racing car, which his son, William B. "Chip" Tatum III of Hanover County, raced at Virginia Motor Speedway. Because his son always wanted to be a racer, Mr. Tatum threw himself wholeheartedly into the endeavor, helping Chip Tatum finish in fourth place during his second season. Mr. Tatum even attended the Richard Petty Driving Experience. When he wasn't able to work on the car during a race, Mr. Tatum still attended and communicated with his son through a radio during the race. A dynamic man, Mr. Tatum "lived life to the fullest," his daughter said. He also was an avid boater and was a member of the Virginia Power Squadron and the Virginia Yacht Club. He was a member of the Mechanicsville Christian Center, where he was active in the men's ministry group. In addition to his son and daughter, Mr. Tatum's survivors include his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Ancarrow Tatum of Hanover; two sisters, Roseann Hester of Mechanicsville and Linda Wade of Colonial Heights; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Burial will follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Courthouse Road in Hanover. on July 29, 2008.7
