Mrs. Lawrence lived in Fletcher most of her life. Also, she was a former Lawton resident. Since 1968, she lived in Marlow at Clear Creek Lake. She worked at Fort Sill in the housekeeping department for six years. She was a former teacher. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and reading. Mrs. Lawrence was a member of Oklahoma Home and Community Educators, helped organize Hope FCE, was a lifetime member of the Marlow VFW Auxiliary and was a member of the Cootie’s. She was a member of Hope Community Church. Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, James and Bernadine Brooks of Port Townsend, Wash., Frank Gene and Joanne Brooks of Marlow, Henry and Louise Brooks of Rochester, Wash., and Tommy Brooks of Mesa, Ariz; a daughter, Corene Markham of Olympia, Wash; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn Terrell of Locust Grove; a sister, Helen Nicholls of Norman; a step son, James Lawrence and his wife, Norma, of Watertown, N.Y; four step grandchildren; and several step great-grandchildren. Bearers will be Mike Waggoner, Steven Brooks, Mike Brooks, Christopher Brooks, Bill Brooks and Jack Anderson. Honorary bearers are Carl Gibbs, Sonny Terrel, Raymond Beck and Raymond Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Community
Church. on January 23, 2003.1

Martin of Franklin; twin daughters, Geraldine Louise Martin of Valparaso and Christina LaVonne Eslinger of Paris, Illinois; a sister, Dora B. Yelch of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; a step-sister, Thelma Ashbuagh of Valparaso; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, three stepbrothers and two stepsisters. He waa a 1930 graduate ot Martinsville High School of Martinsville, Illinois, a 1934 graduate of Franklin College where he played Half-back for Franklin College Football Team was known as the Galloping Ghost and ran track. He was employed for two years by Whitney School System as a Math Teacher was employed for 35 years by Sinclair Oil Co. as Head Expeditor and Purchasing Agent having retired in 1972. He was a member of Whiteland United Methodist Church where he was a Laymember and Delegate to Southern Indiana Methodist Conference and a former delegate to the Northern Illinois Methodist Conference. He was a member Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity noted for volunteering in organizing youth Basketball and Football Leagues in South Texas; Past President of Franklin Senior Center where he served on the Board and was Chief Bingo Caller; Volunteer of the Year in Illinois in 1986; Volunteer for Inter-Church Food Pantry Volunteer at Paris Memorial and Franklin Meadows Nursing Home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery of Franklin. (He was actually buried in Embarrass Cemetery) on January 27, 2000.1

Dora was born to Maude and John Martin on Jan. 1st 1918, in Edgar Co., Ill. She lost her mother at age 5 and when her father remarried, she became the youngest of 12 children. Times were hard for the family, but she retained a positive spirit and tenacity that sustained her for 94 years. In 1939, she married the love of her life, Harry Yelch, and the two moved from the Midwest to California. They moved to Paradise in 1956 where they raised their children in the clean mountain air. Theirs was an inspirational marriage and they were truly partners for life. Dora was an active member of PTA, and served in leadership positions in 4-H, Jr. Ridge Riders and Job's Daughters, as her children were growing up. She was also one of the friendly faces at Horner's Dept. Store for several years. After their retirement, she and Harry spent many memorable days traveling with their RV friends, fishing, and enjoying their grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her sense of humor, honesty and respect for all she met. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and her beloved Harry. Dora is survived by her children, Richard Yelch (Sofia) of San Diego, Sandra Nicholau (Bill) of Paradise, grandchildren, Jonathan Dowden (Lucia) of Yucaipa, Danielle Beutelscheis (Scott) of Folsom, Jarrod Dowden (Karyn) of Colton and step grandchildren Sheraden Nicholau of Hayward and Gavin Nicholau of Tucson, and two great grandchildren, Lillian Grace Beutelscheis and Turner Martin Dowden. She was a mother to more that just her children, including Janet Yelch Weatherby of Maine, Teresa Pisano of Taos, NM. and Ron Cooke of Butte Valley. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces including Chris Horst of Denver CO. Jody Horst, of Palo Alto and Marti Girardi of Torrence. on April 4, 2012.3

     Thelma Louise Conner Thelma Louise Ashbaugh, 94, of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013 at home. She was born November 13, 1918 in Mattoon, Illinois to Davis and Jessie Conner. On July 13, 1941 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Valparaiso, she married James Ashbaugh who passed away March 11, 1997. Thelma is survived by her five children, Judy Umfleet, Steve, Bob, James, and Lynn Sade, her grandchildren, Sharyl, Sandra, Brian, Shawn, Chris, John, Kristen and Jessica; and her great grandchildren, Aaron, Brian, Kayla, Zoey, and Grace. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, Ivan, Raymond, Virginia, Marian, Pearl, and George; and her stepbrothers and stepsisters, Max, Kenneth, Dora Belle, Marian, Blanche, and John. Thelma worked at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso for 39 years in the nursery there. Since 1941, she has been a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Valparaiso and the Eventide Circle and Kneedle Knuts there, the Banta Center where she took part in the Kitchen Kutups Band, and the Banta Knitters. Other memberships include the Women of the Moose Lodge #437 where she attained College of Regents, the V.F.W. Post #988 and part of the Women’s Auxiliary and the Navy Mother’s Club, The Fraternal Order of the Eagles Lodge Aerie #2517, and the American Legion Post #94. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 23rd from 3:30 -7:30 PM at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1507 Glendale Blvd. in Valparaiso. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 11:00 AM, at the church, with visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of services. Rev. David Kovalow-St. John and Rev. Victoria Ubben will be officiating.
