Born February 23, 1915 in Charleston, W.Va., he was a son of the late Charles Cleveland and Minnie Ethel Hatfield. He had lived in Grundy for more than 50 years, "Preacher" Greenleaf, graduated from Charleston High School, Charleston, W.Va., attended Kanawha College (now University of Charleston), Bethany College, Bethany, W.Va., and University of West Virginia, Morgantown, W.Va. Affectionately known as Preacher "G", he preached his first sermon at age 16 near Chapmanville, W.Va., and became known as the "Boy Preacher." While at Kanawha College, Professor McDaniel encouraged him and began making appointments for him to preach on weekends. He would travel as far as Bluefield, Va. to preach in youth meetings and revivals. In the summer of 1935 at age 19, he held a meeting at Graham Christian Church, Bluefield, Va. In 1936, Samuel R. (Pa) Hurley invited him to Grundy, Virginia for a meeting. He preached in a tent on Slate Creek in the bottom immediately below Mountain Mission School. He returned after the revival meeting and taught school at Mountain Mission School during the 1936-1937 school year, and then returned to Charleston to complete his education. On July 31, 1939, he married Louise Pappas in Charleston, W.Va. On February 23, 1941, the Grundy Church of Christ Building burned on his birthday, and he and his wife Louise decided to stay in Grundy until the Church was rebuilt. In 1948, he returned to Charleston, W.Va. to preach at the West Side Church of Christ, where both their families lived. His desire was to win the remainder of their families to the Lord. In 1952, he returned to Grundy, Va. to assume his evangelistic duties at the Grundy Church of Christ, where he ministered for over 50 years. During this time, he also preached at the Little Prater Church of Christ during the 1950's in the afternoon, Rosedale Church of Christ, Big Branch Church of Christ and at the Big Rock Church of Christ, where his transportation was a bicycle. He was the oldest living Boy Scout Leader in Buchanan County, and served as Institutional Head for Boy Scout Troop 40 and 740 of Grundy, Va. In 1985, he was inducted to the Buchanan Hall of Fame. He received the "Most Honored Servant" award at the 1988 North American Christian Convention. He received his Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Kentucky Christian College, Grayson, Ky. He has preached more than 8,000 sermons and 2,600 funerals. He has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles and preached more than 1,000 Revivals. He was instrumental in starting and was the co-founder of the "Daily Radio Broadcast", which has been a daily broadcast for over 50 years, the Grundy Bible Institute, the Church of Christ Youth Camp on Baldwin Mountain, the National Prayer Clinic and many surrounding Churches of Christ in the Mountain area. He started the Crusade for Christ in Buchanan County and the Annual Thanksgiving Service. He was the speaker for several years at the Memorial Day Service at the Mountain Valley Memorial Cemetery in honor of the Veterans of the Mountain area. He was very active in the American Cancer Society and was a former member of the Board of Trustees of Mountain Mission School. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Louise Pappas Greenleaf on July 12, 1990. He is survived by two daughters, Ms. Leona Shortridge of Grundy, Va., Mrs. Carolyn and her husband, Don Looney of Tazewell, Va; one sister-in-law, Dreama Wilkinson of Greensboro, N.C. He is also survived by four grandchildren, David Mark Shortridge, Donny Looney, Shannon Looney and Christelle Louise Bostic, and by thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a very special friend, David Delaney. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sidney Greenleaf and one grandson, William "Billy" Looney. Funeral services for Preacher Clarence Smith Greenleaf will be conducted Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Grundy Church of Christ with Evangelists, Steve Hagy, Tom Cooper, Joe O'Neal, Michael Trent and Jim Viers officiating, with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Virginia. Friends may call Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Grundy Church of Christ with an evening service Sunday evening at 6 p.m. and Monday evening service at 7 p.m. Active Pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of the Grundy Church of Christ, David Delaney, Lonnie Stiltner and Herb Fields. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ethel Morgan, Ramona Farmer, Edith G. Street and employees of Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia. He is survived by one daughter, Christelle Louise, and husband, Ronnie Bostic, Tazewell, VA; two sons, Donny, and wife, Renae Looney, Hickory, NC, Shannon and wife, Corrie Looney, Pounding Mill, VA; one brother, Jerry, and wife, Virginia Dawn Looney, Vansant, VA. Also, survived by 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, William Looney, and one brother, Leland Looney. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, VA. on September 5, 2012.1
