Her Social Security Number was 538-20-7718.3 Leitha Fern Tschan HERMISTON - Leitha Fern Tschan Tilden died on Dec. 2, at Columbia Care Cottage in Hermiston. She was born in Caldwell, Idaho. Her father died when Fern was 3 and Fern, her mother, and twin sister moved to Tacoma, Wash., where Fern graduated from high school. She took some teacher's training after high school. Though she never used her training professionally, she put it to good use, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and women's Bible studies for many years. Fern moved to Juneau, Alaska to be near her sister. There she met Lyle Tilden and got to know him as they worked on the roof of a new church building together. They were married in 1952. Lyle was a career Coast Guardsman and over the next 20 years, they moved to New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, Bangkok, Thailand, Astoria, and finally, in 1975, to Hermiston. Lyle and Fern had four children, each born in a different state. Fern worked as a homemaker and as a seamstress and salesperson. Fern was an active member of Umatilla Baptist Church. She was an expert seamstress and made all of her daughters' wedding dresses. She had a compassionate heart and listening ear for her family and many friends. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She was known for her gracious hospitality and entertained many friends and acquaintances. Fern was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1995. She was able to live at home, cared for by her husband and other family members, as well as devoted caregivers and home health nurses, until the final year of her illness. Fern is survived by her husband, Lyle Tilden; her four children and their spouses, John and Nancy Sarpola of Corvallis, Mark and Roseanne Tilden of Gig Harbor, Wash., Gary and Brenda Knight of Hermiston, Mike and Sharon Lawler of Ferndale, Wash; her twin sister and her husband, Vic and Fay Morris of Mesa, Ariz; 10 grandchildren, Matt Sarpola and his wife Karli Luksch of Corvallis, Dave Sarpola of Corvallis, Jessica and her husband Robert Crosby of Seattle, Katie Tilden of Portland, Travis and Melody Knight of Hermiston, and Nathan, Joy, Anna and Jonathan Lawler of Ferndale, Wash. Fern had a vibrant confident relationship with Jesus Christ that affected every aspect of her life. One of her favorite verses in the Psalms describes the kind of life Fern lived: "Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord: trust in him." The Tilden family thanks those who have shown us so many kindnesses during the last 12 years. Many friends from the church and community helped to care for Fern, providing respite and encouragement. We are deeply grateful to nursing student John Dennis, who lived with Lyle and helped care for Fern during the last five years at home. We are also grateful to the devoted staff of TLC Home Health, the Vange John Memorial Hospice, and Columbia Care Cottage for their compassionate care of our wife and mother.5 She was born on February 8, 1927 at Caldwell, Canyon Co., Idaho.3 As of February 14, 1952,her married name was Tilden.4 She married Lyle Gaylord Tilden on February 14, 1952 at Juneau, Juneau Borough, Alaska Territory.4,5 Leitha Fern Tschan died on December 2, 2007 at Hermiston, Umatilla Co., Oregon, at age 80.3,7,5

Here they continued their life of service to family, community, and church. Vic entered into the presence of Jesus the morning of August 9th, 2013. His loving, and devoted wife of 67 years was at his side until his very last breath on earth. He spent the last 4 years of his life, fighting back from a debilitating stroke, and was joyfully released from his earthly body and presented with a new eternal one, without pain or suffering. Vic and Fay had four children, three boys and one girl, and throughout his life, he was actively involved in just about every sport or activity that any of his children participated in!
