Roxann Bassett was buried at Bassett Cemetery, Bassett, Virginia.3,4 She Roxann Bassett Dillon, granddaughter of Charles Columbus Bassett, co-founder of Bassett Furniture Industries and daughter of J. E. “Ed” Bassett, Sr., former C.E.O. and Chairman of Bassett Furniture Industries, passed away peacefully in her home on January 25th , 2016 surrounded by her family. She was 82. Roxann was born on April 8, 1933 in Bassett, to John Edwin Bassett, Sr. and Ruby Williams Bassett. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Lynwood Dillon, Sr. and brothers John Edwin”Eddie” Bassett, Jr and Charles Columbus Bassett, III. Roxann, “Mama Dill”, is survived by her three devoted children and four loving grandchildren: Son, Dwight Lynwood “Len” Dillon, Jr and wife Mary Kate Dillon of Stanleytown and grandchildren Caitlin Dillon Purinai and husband Jon Purinai of Raleigh and Molly Stewart Dillon of Charlotte; Son, Hiram Thomas Dillon of Stanleytown; and daughter Ruby Ann Davis and husband Matthew Alan Davis and grandchildren Sarah Fey Davis and Aubrey Egan Davis all of Bassett. Roxann attended Salem Academy and Randolph Macon Woman’s College. She taught at Campbell Court elementary school before becoming a full-time homemaker. Roxann was a selfless giver and quick to be involved with a number of community organizations and causes including the American Red Cross and Patrick Henry Community College. She was a devoted member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church and was a regular face at the Community Meal and organizer of the Ruby Bassett annual rummage sale. Her children and grandchildren remember her as a generous, strong and loving mother who showed them how to be compassionate and enjoy life. Entombment will follow at the Bassett Family Mausoleum. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to caregivers Martha A. Davis, Demetra Hairston, Victoria Martin, Keela Rakes, Taylanda Wimbush and Cornelius Edmonds. Special thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice for their exceptional guidance and care during this special journey.3 She was born on April 8, 1933 at Bassett, Virginia.1,3,4 As of April 12, 1958,her married name was Dillon.2 She married Dwight Lynwood Dillon Sr., son of Harvel Trotter "H.T." She was born April 24, 1908 in Letohatchee, Alabama, the daughter of James Butler Mitchell and Wilmer Rogers Mitchell. Anita lived most of her life in Durham. She was educated in Alabama and was a graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was a member or former member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, Hope Valley Country Club, a sustaining member of The Durham Junior League, Hope Valley Garden Club, The Up To Date Club and Alpha Omega Sorority. Her favorite pastime was playing bridge with her dear friends and working in her yard. She was a loyal Duke Football fan only missing two home games in 67 years. She is survived by her devoted and loving children, Herschel A. Caldwell and wife, Mary John of Durham, and Carol Caldwell Venters of Hubert. Other survivors include her four beloved grandchildren, Lara Venters Raban and husband, Gerry of Albuquerque, NM, Anita Gayle Venters Swayne and husband, David of Winston-Salem, Lee Wade Caldwell and James Best Caldwell, both of Wilmington; five great-grandchildren, Karl, Lindsay, and Billy Raban and Katie and Bradley Swayne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herschel Amos Caldwell Sr. on April 26, 2011.1
