M. Shelton, Corona, who are here; two brothers, Jack Davidson, Corona, who is here, and Col. Frank H. Shelton, Detroit, Mich; a sister, Mrs. Louise Korges, San Francisco, Calif. He had been ill for several years and seriously ill the past two months. Mr. Zimmerman was born July 13, 1890, north of McCune to Noah and Sarah Jane Mccoy Zimmerman. He had lived in the area all of his life. He was a veteran a WWI and a member of the United Chapel Church. He married Eulalia Amos on Nov. 11, 1917. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Luther Zimmerman, McCune and Ray Zimmerman, Trenton, Ohio, and six grandchildren. Three sisters preceded him in death. Amos, 76, Erie, died Tuesday morning at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons. She has been in ill health for several years. Mrs. Amos was born Feb. 11, 1893, at McCune. On Aug. 23, 1911 she married Ernest W. Amos. The couple lived in Erie for five years and then moved to McCune. They returned to Erie in 1942. Mr. Amos died in 1967. Mrs. Amos was a member of the Erie Federated Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. John Harris, Erie, Mrs. Norman Smith, Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Mrs. George Mattox, Parsons; a son, James Amos, Pomona Calif; two sister, Mrs. Bertha Ott, Grand Junction, Colo, and Mrs. Anna Aams, Altamont; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She married George W. Mattox on April 26, 1946, at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Parsons. He survives of the home. They had lived in Parsons since their marriage. For 22 years she was a cook in Parsons schools. She was a member of First Christian Church of Parsons, the Christian Women's Fellowship and Ladies Auxiliary of Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Mattox of Parsons and Jeanette Parsons and her husband, Roger, of Lee's Summit, Mo; two grandchildren, Brett Parsons and Aubrey Parsons, both of Lee's Summit; and three sisters, Ruby Harris and Freda Graver, both of Erie, and Fern Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Mattox, 94, longtime area resident, died at 1:12 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2017, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor, where he had resided the past several years. He was born Nov. 12, 1922, in rural McCune to George E. and Bertha Louise (Fickess) Mattox. He grew up in the McCune area and during World War II served with the 10th Army. He received the Bronze Star for his participation in the Invasion of Okinawa. George and Vera H. Amos were married on April 23, 1946, at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Parsons. They made their home in Parsons after their marriage. Vera preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2004. For three years Mattox was foreman for the construction of the Fall River Dam. In 1948, he began employment with the Ankortite Co., later named Dayton Superior. He retired in 1987. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Parsons and the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. In past years he and Vera were active in the Good Sams Camping Club. He enjoyed their cabin on the Neosho River and following the activities of his grandchildren. He was privileged to meet and hold all five of his great-grandchildren. Surviving are his daughter, Jeanette Parsons and her husband, Roger; grandson, Brett Parsons and wife Jill; granddaughter, Aubrey Shortino and husband Michael; great-grandchildren, Beckett and Karaleigh Parsons, Brooklyn, Boston and Brock Shortino; sisters, Lela and Wilma; and sisters-in-law, Janet, Jean and Barb. His daughter, Judy Mattox, preceded him in death on March 30, 2010. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Carl, Lee, Dwain, Jim, Bob and Don; and sisters, Wanda, Helen and Loletta. The service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Chaplain Wayne Mason officiating.      Judy Irene Mattox LENEXA — Judy Mattox, 60, a former Parsons resident, died at 4:43 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at her home in Lenexa. Death was unexpected. She had moved from Parsons to Johnson County in 2006. She was born July 13, 1949, in Parsons to George W. and Vera H. (Amos) Mattox. She attended school in Parsons and lived here most of her life. For 14 years, she was employed at Broderick Manufacturing Co. and later worked for CLASS Ltd. in its sheltered workshop. She was a member of First Christian Church in Parsons. She attended the Bethesda Options Day Service in Olathe and greatly loved all of the activities it provided. She loved movies and going for pizza, to the park, to ball games and to church. She also enjoyed returning to Parsons to visit her father and participating in the activities of her sister's family. Survivors include her father, George Mattox of Parsons; her sister and her husband, Jeanette and Roger Parsons of Lee's Summit, Mo; a nephew and his wife, Brett and Jill Parsons of Lee's Summit, Mo; and a niece and her husband, Aubrey and Michael Shortino of Lee's Summit, Mo. Her mother, Vera Mattox, preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 2004. The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in McCune Cemetery. She lived at the home in Erie before entering Arkhaven Guest Homes in 1992. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, crossword puzzles, shopping at garage sales, and playing music with her sisters. She was a member of the United Chapel Church near McCune, the Beantown Ramblers Camping Club, Myrtle Rebekah Lodge, the Friendship Club, and the Home Demonstration Unit of Neosho County. Survivors include five sons, John R. Harris, Parsons, Dean Harris, Parsons, Charles Harris, Erie, David Harris, Erie, Jerry Harris, Victorville, Calif; two daughters, Coleen Yockey, Grove, Okla., Patsy Richey, Erie; and 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Freda Graver, Erie, Fern Smith, West Liberty, Ohio. She was born Aug. 21, 1917, at McCune a daughter of Ernest William and Theresa Edith (McCalister) Amos. She was raised at McCune and her school years were spent at Mound country school and McCune Rural High School. She married Harold Wright of Pratt on Jan. 26, 1936, at the Parsons Foursquare Church. They made their home on a farm southeast of St. Paul for 36 years. Retiring in 1972, they moved to a home in Erie. Mr. Wright preceded her in death in September 1979. She later married Roy Neil Graver on Feb. 7, 1987, at the First Christian Church at Erie. He preceded her in death on April 28, 2009. Freda was a member of First Christian Church, the Rebecca Lodge and was a Grey Lady at the nursing home at Erie. She was also a charter member of the Erie Beantown Ramblers camping club for more than 30 years. She was also a homemaker who enjoyed sharing her farm lifestyle with family and friends. She was supportive of veterans and was loved by all who knew her. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Wright of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and Donald Wright of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; three daughters, JoAn McManus and her husband, Jim, of Grant's Pass, Oregon, Norma Jean Burns and her husband, Earl, of Newark, Delaware, and Connie Sumpter of Westville, Florida; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-and great-great-grandchildren. Amos, daughter of Ernest William Amos and Theresa Edith McCallister, on February 7, 1987 at Erie, Neosho Co., Kansas.^3,2 Roy Neil Graver died on April 28, 2010 at Joplin, Newton Co., Missouri, at age 89.^1,3 He Roy "Neil" Graver, 89, of Erie, died at 1:08 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. He was born October 12, 1920, in Las Animas, Colorado, to Bert Lee and Elizabeth A. (Kimball) Graver. At the age of six months, he moved with his family to Kansas where they lived nine miles northwest of McCune. He attended schools in the Union and McCune areas. Following high school, he worked as a mechanic, steamfitter, and eventually was engaged in farming northwest of McCune. He and Winona Ruth Hammonds were married October 26, 1941, in Girard, Kansas. She preceded him in death on December 22, 1984. On February 7, 1987, he and Freda (Amos) Wright were married and resided in Erie. She survives of the home. He was a member of the Bean Town Campers and had been attending the First Christian Church in Erie. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, working on cars and playing cards. The family later moved to St. Paul where she graduated from the St. Paul High School. On August 17, 1941 she and Norman Smith were united in marriage (they were fellow classmates). Mr. Smith worked in Civil Service and the couple lived in Texas, South Dakota and Pennsylvania When he retired, they moved to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Mr. Smith preceded her in death after 48 years of marriage on September 1989. Fern moved to West Liberty, Ohio, in 2005. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, reading and traveling. Survivors include: Three sons – Norman Dean Smith, and his wife, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Paul Leon Smith, Pompano Beach, Fla., Rodney Wayne Smith, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; one daughter, Marilyn Kay Schertzer and her husband, Jim, Bellefontaine, Ohio; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Freda Graver, Lee’s Summit, MO. LUCIE, Fla — Norman Smith, 68, a former Parsons resident, died at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept 15, 1989, in the emergency room of the HCA Medical Center at Port St Lucie, Fla. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected. He was born at Clarksville, Ark. on May 22, 1921 to John and Ida (Holcomb) Smith. He was married to Fern Amos on Aug 17, 1941, at McCune. She survives of the home in Florida. Mr. Smith was employed with the safety department of the federal government for 40 years and retired in 1981 as a safety director. He had lived for many years at Erie and later at Parsons for 11 years. He also lived in El Paso, Texas for a few years. They lived in South Dakota where he worked with the Black Hills Army Department until moving to Mechanicsburg, Pa. where they lived for 23 years. In 1987 they moved to Florida where they have lived since then. He was a member of Parsons Lodge No 117 AF & AM and the American Legion at Port St. Lucie, Fla. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Other survivors include: three sons, Norman and Rodney, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Paul of Pompano Beach, Fla; a daughter, Marilyn Albrecht of Bellefontaine, Ohio; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son and a granddaughter. The service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Picrce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie with the Rev. Fred Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery south of Erie. on September 16, 1989.⁴

     Donald Dean Harris Donald Dean Harris, 82, of Parsons, died at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2020 at his home. Death followed a brief period of failing health. He was born January 8, 1938, in rural McCune, to John E. and Ruby (Amos) Harris. The family lived in rural McCune through his early years and moved to Erie during his late high school years. He graduated from Erie High School in 1955. In November of 1955 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and continued for 20 years with duty stations in Topeka, Guam, Maine and finally at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he was with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology as a medical technician. Early in his Air Force career he had received training through Washburn University in Topeka for his medical technician work. On October 20, 1956 he and Elaine Ferguson, also an Erie native, were married in Erie. She and their three daughters were with Dean on his various assignments and when he retired from the Air Force in 1975 they settled in Parsons. Dean was employed as a medical technician at the Katy Hospital until it’s closure. Then he worked at the Parsons Clinic for 14 years until his retirement. He had many interests and especially enjoyed a life of simplicity, often recalling the days of his early life on the farm. He loved being outdoors and spending time at his home. He developed a close bond with the Amish and often helped members of that community. He had a passion for gas engines and was active in the SEK Old Time Gas Engines organization. Dean was a craftsman and woodworker. He had made grandmother clocks for his three daughters and for many other family members. His most recent project was the restoration of a grandfather clock. Dean was active in the P.A.L.S. organization and spent many hours as a volunteer at the shelter for animals. He helped maintain the grounds at the First Christian Church of Parsons, where he was a member. For many years he and Elaine were active members of the former Beantown Ramblers Camping Club. Survivors are his wife, Elaine, of the home; three daughters, Linda Hughes (Terry) of Wichita, Deanna Basgall (Paul) and Debra Jordan (Dr. Kerry) both of Olathe; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, John Harris (Joan) of Chetopa, David Harris (Jeanette) and Charles Harris (Carol) both of Erie and Jerry Harris (Marsha) of Victorville, CA; two sisters Coleen Yockey (Ronnie) of Scranton, PA and Patsy Richey (Steve) of Erie. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the First Christian Church in Parsons, with Rev. Jennifer Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery at Erie, with military honors provided by the Erie American Legion.⁴ He was buried at East Hill Cemetery, Erie, Neosho Co., Kansas.⁴ He was born on January 8, 1938 at McCune, Crawford Co., Kansas.⁴ He married Elaine Ferguson on October 20, 1956.⁴ Donald Dean Harris died on July 26, 2020 at Parsons, Labette Co., Kansas, at age 82.⁴
