Marie Fought was buried at Manchester Cemetery, New Franklin, Summit Co., Ohio.9 Her Social Security Number was 234-18-1780.10 She was born on March 8, 1919 at Newark, Wirt Co., West Virginia.3,10,5,9 As of February 18, 1938,her married name was Frederick.3 She married Kenneth Earl Frederick Sr. on February 18, 1938 at Wetzel Co., West Virginia.3,4 Marie Fought FOUR CHILDREN DIE AS BLAZE SWEEPS MANCHESTER HOME - Two Older Boys Jump To Safety Efforts To Save Others Fail. Twin girls and their two brothers were burned to death early today when fire destroyed their home at 403 Ott dr., Manchester. Dead are Judy and Joyce Frederick, 6-year-old twins, and their brothers, James 11, and Dennis, 8. They and four other children and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Frederick, were asleep when the fire broke out about 1:15 a.m. Kenneth, 17, and Michael, 15, jumped to safety from an upstairs room. The other young sters, Sue Ellen, 9, and Tom, 12, also escaped. Michael may have seriously injured his left foot when he jumped. The leg already had been in a cast as a result of a power mower accident. The youth's crutch was burned in the fire. Deputy Sheriff Waynt Eaken and Charles Madden, chief coroner's Investigator, called the fire one of the worst tragedies they had ever seen. Bodies of the four children were burned beyond recognition, they said. The fire apparently started la the twins' downstairs bedroom although the cause has not been determined. Sue Ellen, who slept down stairs, discovered the fire and awakened her parents but was unable to rouse the twins. Frederick told Eaken that he ran into the twins room and grabbed the flaming draperies oil the windows. "I then ran into the garage for a fire extinguisher," Frederick said. "As I left the garage the whole house was on fire. I couldn't go back In." He said he ran to the twins' bedroom and grabbed something in the yard to smash in the window which was locked inside. He saw the twins at the window but they fell backward to the floor, overcome by smoke. Mrs. Frederick shouted to her sons to jump. Kenneth and Michael did but the two smaller boys, Dennis and James, didn't awaken. Firemen found their bodies huddled in what was left of their beds. Eaken said "there was so much fire you couldn't get near the place." "I've never seen anything like it," he added. Both Frederick and his wife. Marie, received minor burns and young Tom suffered ill effects from the smoke. Fifteen volunteer firemen from Manchester and Clinton along with five pieces of equipment answered the call. Neighbors across the road, Mr. and Mrs. V. D. Johnson, sounded the alarm, Johnson said firemen ran out of water several times and had to go back for more to fill the tanks on the trucks. "As we played water on the house we could see one of the twins through the window," said Johnny Hughes, a Manchester fireman. Mike Harget, Franklin Twp. fire chief, estimated loss to the house and furnishings at $9,000. First story of the place is concrete block and the upper story is frame. The family salvaged only their night clothes. Part of the family is living temporarily with Mrs. Frederick's mother, Mrs. Nellie Fought at 1386 Moore st. in South Akron. Others plan to make their home temporarily with Frederick's brother, Clifford, at 1195 Swigart rd., Manchester. Kenneth Frederick is an employe of the Borden Milk Co. Already plans are being made in the Manchester area for a campaign to acquire clothing and other essentials for the Fredericks. Harold Schuler, commander of the Paul Harget American Legion post, has called a special meeting of Legionnaires tonight at his home, 871 W. Nimisila rd. Meanwhile, funeral arrangements for Judy, Joyce, Dennis and James are incomplete. Harold Schuler, commander of the Paul Harget American Legion post, has called a special meeting of Legionnaires tonight at his home, 871 W. Nimisila rd. Meanwhile, funeral arrangements for Judy, Joyce, Dennis and James are incomplete. Their bodies are at the Swigart Funeral Home in Canal Fulton. on June 1, 1955.8 He The community of Manchester has raised more than $3,200 in less than two days to construct a home for the stricken Frederick family whose residence was destroyed in a fire which took the lives of four of their eight children early Wednesday morning. While Mr, and Mrs. Kenneth E. Frederick and their remaining four children are residing for the present in the homes of relatives in Barberton and Akron, donations of furniture, clothing, and food are being brought to the Manchester fire station to rehabilitate the family. Commitment services for the four victims of the fire, who were trapped in their bedrooms when flames enveloped their cement block home, are scheduled for 2 p.m. today in the Manchester cemetery. The Rev, A. C. Reed, pastor of the Manchester Church of Christ, will officiate at the services for James, 11, Dennis, 8 and Joyce and Judy, twins who would have been six years old next month. Fire Chief H. B. Harget of the Manchester fire department which extinguished the blaze with the aid of the Clinton fire department said today that the cause of the blaze is still undetermined and that he is continuing his investigation. Michael Frederick, 15, one of the survivors of the fire was taken Thursday to the Orrville Osteopathic hospital where it was determined that his foot was not re-fractured when he jumped to safety from his bedroom on the second floor of the burning house. However, the cast which had been placed on the foot several weeks ago when the boy caught his foot in a power mower had been cracked and it was necessary to replace it with another. The other surviving children, Kenneth, who was 17 today, Thomas, 12, and Sue Ellen, 9, were not injured. Frederick suffered a burn on his right hand in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the fire victims. His wife, Marie, also was not injured. Members of Paul Harget post, American Legion, will canvass the remainder of the Manchester community this evening for contributions to the home building fund and will contact residents in the surrounding areas over the weekend. Some of the money will be used to help secure a lot on which the home will be built. A number of bricklayers, plasterers, plumbers and other tradesmen in the Manchester area have indicated they will volunteer their services in constructing the new residence for the family. Legionnaires having trucks will collect donations of furniture Saturday. A number of items of furniture have been brought to the fire station but those having donations to be called for at their homes are asked to call Harold Schuler, commander of the post at TU 2-3317. Included among the furniture donated to the family are several new bedroom suites by the Borden Milk Co. of Akron where Frederick is employed as an engineer. The Sear Rubber Co. of Akron, where Frederick works several evenings each week as a side job, has contributed a check for $50, $25 for groceries and complete wardrobes for the survivors of the tragedy. "The furniture donations will be stored in a vacant house on the property of Frederick's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Frederick of Barberton where some members of the family are living at the present time. The house, as well as a completely furnished house in Manchester have been offered to the family for temporary use. However, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick have not made any future plans. The legion post plans to hold an auction of articles of furniture which are duplicated or not needed and to present the proceeds to the Frederick family for other needs. The Akron chapter of the Red Cross has provided clothing for the family. The auxiliary to the Manchester fire department is handling Nothing and food items brought to the fire station. on June 3, 1955.9 He died on November 12, 1999 at Florida at age 82.7,3,4 He SEFFNER, Fla. - Kenneth Earl Frederick, 82, passed away Friday, November 12, 1999.
