Mary Frances ("Murph") grew up on and around the beaches of Norfolk. The youngest of four children, Mary Frances attended Holy Trinity Catholic School, where she graduated from high school in 1949. An outgoing personality and love of dance kept her active in school and "jitterbugging" at the local beach clubs. Following high school, Mary Frances attended Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary (now VCU), where she acquired the nickname "Murph" and met her future husband, Bill Kelley ("Kelley"). Throughout her young life, Murph held administrative positions in both civil service and the private sector. Eventually settling in Roanoke, Murph and Kelley reared three daughters and built their business, "Kelley Advertising Art," which operated in the Roanoke Valley for over 25 years. In addition to her loving and active role as "Mom," Murph was an accomplished proofreader for the business as well as bookkeeper until her retirement in 1994. She loved dancing, the beach, a good laugh, and all things concerning her children and grandchildren. For over 50 years, she was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Roanoke, and chose to spend the last years of her life across the street at Our Lady of the Valley to be "closer to home."
