H. Aldridge and Lydia Alice Naff, on August 12, 1936 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,3,4,2 As of August 12, 1936,her married name was Aldridge. Gertha Mae Alderman died on February 15, 2015 at Vinton, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 97.² She Gertha Alderman Aldridge, 97, formerly of Floyd, Va., passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2015, at The Berkshire Health and Rehabilitation Center, Vinton, Va., where she was a resident for more than five years. She was the oldest child born to John E. and Almeda Sowers Alderman.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stant; her daughter, Carol Aldridge Mabery; her brothers, Edgar and William; sisters, Freeda A. Gragan, Elizabeth A Sowers, Ruby A Gray, Alice Alderman; and infant sisters, Shelby Jean and Hazel Marie.She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Aldridge Conner and her husband, Jack,of Bedford County; granddaughter, Kathryn Conner Holland and her husband, Gregg, of Salem; grandsons, Michael Kevin Mabery and his wife, Susan, of Roanoke, and J. Clay Conner and his wife, Christi, of Georgetown, Ky; great-grandsons, Adam Gregory and Grayson Conner Holland, Michael Christopher and Kevin Edward Mabery; great-granddaughters, Olivia Carol and Campbell Grace Conner. Her sister-in-law, Lorraine Alderman; her son-in-law, Edward Mabery and his wife, Doris; several nieces and nephews in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and New Jersey; and special friends, Margie and Roger Shortt, Hansel Robertson, Robert and Lucille Miles also survive her.The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon on Friday, February 20, 2015, at the Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, with service immediately following with the Reverend Darlene Marshall officiating. She was born September 16, 1937 in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Russell L. and Blanche Poff Peters, Sr. She was a 1955 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, Salem, Va., a member of the Salem Baptist Church and was retired from Western State Hospital, Staunton. Surviving are her husband, Walter Thomas “Tommy” Wood of Grottoes; a sister, Betty Peters Damron, Vinton; a brother and sister-in-law, Russell L. and Judy Peters, Daleville; and several nieces and nephews. A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 1997, at the Chapel of McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro, by the Rev. Derwood Cowan. Burial will follow in Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Crimora. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 14, 1997 at the funeral home and other times at the residence. Dale was born November 26, 1950 in Roanoke, Virginia to Elsie and Clint Carr. She had a true fighting spirit and will forever be remembered as someone who would not give in to her disease. Dale is preceded in death by her father, James Clinton Carr of Floyd, Va. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Thomas Thompson Duncan; her mother, Elsie Carr; daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Jonathan Richardson; daughter, Hollie Duncan; brother and sister-in-law, James Timothy and Donna Carr; two grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth and Jack Richardson. Dale is also survived by many loving family members, life-long friends, and her church family of First Baptist Church in Roanoke. Memorial services will be conducted in the Abbey of Sherwood Memorial Park. on April 6, 2006.³
