He was born July 24, 1938 in a small home on a farm in Craig County. Ray was retired from G.E. after 28 years. He was a farmer all his life. He is preceded by parents Walter and Norene Fisher; brothers Clyde and Robert Fisher; sisters Dorothy Fisher, Virginia Snider, and Martha Caldwell. He is survived by loving wife of 57 years Lillie Fisher; son and daughter-in-law Darrell and Ann Fisher; daughters Teresa and Benita Fisher; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a special grandson Justin Dudding of the home; sisters Edith Ruble, Thelma Goodman, and Sue Hancock. Sylvia Lee Poff Sylvia Poff Shortt, Apr 29, 1931 - Oct 10, 2024. Sylvia Poff Shortt, 93, passed away on October 10, 2024. She was predeceased by her husband, Diamond Shortt; parents, James Lafayette Poff and Ocie Poff; siblings, Edmund Poff, Murrie Poff, Evelyn Conner, Beulah Vest, Colleen King, Jaqueline Blackwell, and Shirley Poff. Sylvia was a master seamstress, creating works of art in quilts and draperies. She worked at Purdue’s Custom Drapes, Stedman House, and Jerry’s Custom Draperies, sewing until her 80’s. She was a member of Colonial Avenue Baptist Church. Sylvia volunteered at South Roanoke Nursing Home conducting Bingo. Sylvia is survived by daughters, Janet Shortt and Susan Shortt-Ring (Jax); grandson, Brent Ring (Anna); and great granddaughter, Jane Ring; siblings, Louise Thompson (Dorsey) and Wilson Poff (Audrey); sisters in law, Joyce Poff, Emma Poff, and Margie Shortt; and many nieces and nephews. The burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Special thanks to nieces, Margaret Jones, Charlotte Brown, and Yvonne Blackwell for their care and compassion.9 She was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.9 She was born on April 29, 1931 at Copper Hill, Floyd Co., Virginia.11,9 She married Diamond Shortt on August 22, 1952 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,10,2,3,9 As of August 22, 1952,her married name was Shortt. She enjoyed a career as a beautician, was an avid darts competitor, a long-time member of the Moose Lodge and loved to cook, often doing so for others in her community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Tilson Tyson and Sybil Pearl Nutter; and brothers, H.T. Loyd, Harry Wayne Loyd, of Roanoke, and Michael Dale Loyd, of Salem. She is survived by her son, William "Scott" Slusser and wife, Patti, of Vinton; brother, Marvin Loyd, and wife, Evelyn, of Salem; Grandchildren, Dillon, Justin, Brandalyn, Amber; Great-grandchildren, Sadie, Lana; and closest to her heart, Vonn Slusser, her “BooBoo.” Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Valley Funeral Home, with visitation at beginning at noon on Wednesday, April 18, 2018; Reverend Marvin Loyd will officiate.2 She was born on April 27, 1948 at Roanoke, Virginia.1 She married William Lomax Slusser, son of Oakey Schoolfield Slusser and Ethel Blanche Crawford, on May 1, 1969 at Eden, Rockingham Co., North Carolina.1 As of May 1, 1969,her married name was Slusser.1 Marlene Louise Lloyd and William Lomax Slusser were divorced on November 21, 1991 at Craig Co., Virginia.1 Marlene Louise Lloyd died on April 14, 2018 at Virginia at age 69.2

Mary Louise Poff Louise Poff Thompson of Floyd, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3rd, 2026 surrounded by her family. She was born on May 3rd, 1933 to the late James Lafayette and Ocie Wilson Poff in Copper Hill, Virginia. On January 3rd, 1954, Louise married the love of her life, Dorsey H. Thompson. Together, they made their home in Floyd, Virginia, where they raised their family of five children. Throughout her life, Louise was a devoted wife and a steadfast partner on the farm, all while lovingly nurturing their children. She taught them to help those in need, to love their neighbors, and to carry a deep faith in the Lord. When she became a grandmother, Louise ensured that her grandchildren’s visits were filled with adventure, learning, and joy. Working in the garden, swimming in the river, learning to cook, and taking long walks are cherished memories shared by her eleven grandchildren. In later years, she delighted in visits from her great grandchildren and the energy and excitement they brought to her home. Louise welcomed everyone who came to the farm with warmth and generosity. Anyone who stopped by—especially at mealtime—was greeted with a full table and an open invitation. Mrs. Thompson was a dedicated member of Floyd Baptist Church, where she began attending in the mid 60’s. She was a faithful member, serving in various ways including teaching Sunday school, helping with Bible School, preparing meals, and assisting in the nursery. In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her siblings, Edmund Poff, Evelyn Conner, Beulah Vest, Colleen King, Jacqueline Blackwell, Murray Poff, Sylvia Shortt, Wilson Poff, and Shirley Poff. Louise is survived by her husband of 72 years, Dorsey H. Thompson; sons Steven (Dawn), Terry (Liz), and Doug (Staci); daughters Myra Grim (Mark) and Rhonda Vaughn (Jeff); grandchildren Joshua Thompson, Sarah Scyphers (Aaron), Matthew Grim (Vashti), Daniel Grim (Morgan), Benjamin Thompson (Lizena), Bradley Vaughn, Emily Caldwell (Jason), Drake Thompson (Kayla), Katelyn Spangler (Austin), Draken Thompson (Laken), and Taylor Jo Thompson (Zachary Sickey); 25 great grandchildren; and a host of devoted nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Gene Thompson (Hazel) and sisters-in-law, Joyce Poff, Emma Poff, Audrey Poff. The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to Nanette West for her years of companionship and devotion; to Krislyn Griffith for her care both at home and in the nursing home; to the staff of Skyline Manor Nursing Home for their attentive and compassionate care; and to Melissa Sheppard with Gentiva Hospice for her guidance, comfort, and support. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd, Virginia. Serving as Pallbearers will be Matthew Grim, Daniel Grim, Benjamin Thompson, Drake Thompson, Draken Thompson and Isaac Scyphers.
