     Wilma Jean Delk Wilma Jean Lerch, who spent the majority of her life in the Tidewater Region, began her life’s journey in Hopewell, VA, where she was born on February 10, 1934. She died on January 3, 2020 surrounded by members of her family. Jean was the daughter of George and Irene Delk. In 1952, she graduated from Warwick High School. Jean began her career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where she worked as a data processor. She was married on September 17, 1955 to her first husband, Richard “Dick” Schultz, who was a photographer for both The Daily Press and NASA. After she lost her husband in a car accident in 1963, Jean dedicated her life to raising her two surviving children, Lisa Michele Ross, and Richard Stuart Schultz, Jr. In addition, she is survived by two sons-in-law, Dale Allen Ross and Robert Wayne Jones Jr; and two grandchildren, Dalton Allen Ross and Taylor Michele McCrae. Jean was expecting her first great grandchild in February 2020. In 1971, Jean married her second husband, Robert G. “Percy” Lerch, who was a sailor in the Navy aboard the submarine Ethan Allen, and then the Naval Reserves from 1963 to 1982, and a Shift Test Engineer at Newport News Shipbuilding from 1972 until his retirement in 2000. After her second marriage, Jean re-entered the workforce and was employed at Montgomery Ward, where she worked in the administrative offices. Jean had many loves and passions. Above all were her family and friends. A close second was her love of Pelicans! Raising her family in the Newmarket area of Newport News, she was a source of support for many of the neighborhood kids, and the house on Roanoke Avenue became a regular meeting place for many of the local children. She was passionate about animals, and with her kids raised everything from turtles and rabbits, to ducks and dogs. Her “animal farm” also included the family horse, Homer Sparkle. Jean, along with her children, developed a passion for showing dogs. Raising both Irish and English Setters, Jean would travel up and down the East Coast with her children to participate in dog shows at numerous kennel clubs. She supported the development of her children in numerous ways, always encouraging them and their friends to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be. Later in life, she developed a passion for “cruising.” She and her husband, Percy, embarked on numerous cruises in their retirement years, both on their own and with family and friends. They enjoyed many Caribbean islands in their travels, with one of their favorite spots being Freeport, Bahamas. Jean also enjoyed many a slot machine, both on cruise ships and in travels to Atlantic City. She also enjoyed numerous trips to Nags Head and other excursions with her favorite “trio,” which included herself and cousins Tanis Mowery and Linda Wise. He was 71. Born in Carrolton, Ohio Percy had been a Peninsula resident since 1970. Percy retired from the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1982 after 20 years active and reserve service. He also retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 2000 after 29 years as a Quality Inspection Department Engineer. An avid pool player, Percy was a member of the American Poolplayers Association for more than 20 years. He also was a member of the Warwick Moose Lodge. Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Jean Lerch; children, Lisa Michele Ross, of Gloucester and Richard S. Schultz Jr., of Midlothian, VA; grandchildren, Dalton Allen Ross and Taylor Michele Ross; sisters, Rose Sherrod, of Pollok, Texas, and Peggy McDonald, of Houston, Texas. Percy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and touched the lives of so many people who became his life-long friends. He and his wife enjoyed trips to the beach and cruises to the Caribbean whenever possible. The family wishes to express their thanks to his incredible network of friends for their support at this time. on April 13, 2012.²

     Richard Stuart Schultz was buried at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia.^1,3,5,8,9 He was born on October 23, 1933 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.^{1,2,3,4,5,9,10} He married Wilma Jean Delk, daughter of George William Delk and Irene Alois Neal, on September 17, 1955 at Hampton, Virginia.^1,2,6,7 Richard Stuart Schultz died on January 26, 1963 at Newport News, Virginia, at age 29.^1,3,5,9,10,6 He Richard Stuart Schultz, 29, a former photographer for The Daily Press, Inc., was fatally injured at 1:05 Saturday morning when his car struck a tree on Jefferson Ave. near Fort Eustis Blvd. He lived at 7605 Roanoke Ave., Newport News. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Riverside Hospital from injuries received when his car side-swiped one tree and struck another head on. His death was attributed to a severed jugular vein. Mr. Schultz was returning from Williamsburg where he had attended a meeting of the Virginia Press Photographers Association being held in connection with the two-day Virginia Press Association Conference and meetings of the Associated Press. There were no known witnesses to the accident, according to Newport News Traffic Capt. Capt. Arthur L. Searls. His death was the city's first traffic fatality of the year. Mr. Schultz, at the time of his death, was employed full-time by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as a photographer and employed part-time by the Daily Press, Inc., in the photo lab. He was born in Los Angeles and was a veteran of the Korean war. While serving in the U.S. Air Force at Langley Air Force Base, following his duty in Korea, he was employed in the photographic department of The Daily Press, Inc., on a part-time basis. Following his discharge from the service in 1957 he became a full-time photographer. He resigned to join NASA Dec, 12, 1961, and began part-time work in the Daily Press photo lab shortly thereafter. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Wilma Jean Delk Schultz who is expecting a child in March; daughter, Lisa M. Schultz; mother, Mrs. J. R. Naddeo of Englewood, Calif; father, S. E. Schultz of Englewood; sister, Miss Marline Schultz of Los Angeles, and half brother, Frank Naddeo of Los Angeles. on January 27, 1963.⁶

White was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of Seaford's Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty White; four children, Christopher O. White Jr., Pompano Beach, Fla., Thomas White, Hamilton, Va., and Charles E. White and Debbie White, Seaford; four stepchildren, Douglas A. Morris, Wanda L. Callaway, Seaford, Ricky L.
