She was born June 14, 1924 at Barbours Creek, Craig County, Virginia the daughter of Vannie and Clarence Tingler, Sr. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Carol Jean; and brothers, Clarence Tingler, Jr., and Rex Tingler. Surviving is her husband of 59 years, T.R. Friar, Sr; daughters, Diane Stilwell and husband, Ralph of Morgantown, W.Va., Denise Goodman and husband, Richard of Cary, N.C., Debra Gillespie and husband, Jeffrey of Leon, W.Va; and her son T.R. Friar, Jr. of Raleigh, N.C. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Nathan and Aaron Stilwell, Jason and Jessica Goodman, and Lindsay Huddleston. She was a member of Belmont Christian Church while living in Roanoke and worked at Puritan Mills for several years upon graduation from Jefferson High School in 1942. She married her husband in 1946 and after he graduated from Roanoke College in 1956, he accepted a position with a chemical manufacturer and moved the family to Point Pleasant, W.Va. She joined the Trinity United Methodist church and assisted in the nursery. Bernice read, sewed, canned, gardened, played bridge, chauffeured her children, attended church, and basically was the mom and wife that people dream of today. There was always a home cooked meal, clean clothes, a clean home, and a shoulder if you needed one. She was the first one up in the morning and the last to bed at night. Internment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on Airport Road in Roanoke. on June 7, 2006.3

Mr. Friar served in the United States Naval Air Force during World War II. He retired from Stauffer Chemical Company in Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va. He was a member of the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, a Rotarian and a member of the Pleasant Valley Hospital Board of Trustees. Entombment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Garden Chapel Mausoleum. on May 16, 2009.3
