He spent his early years in Tampa and served in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge he moved to Los Angeles in 1966. She was preceded in death by her parents, W. Stuart and Ethel Mattox; aunts, Vera Brugh and Willie Woods and her husband, (Smokey Joe); cousins, Benny and Margret Woods. She is survived by her loved ones, cousins Carolynn and William Woods, along with their children, step-children, grandchildren, and step-grandchildren, especially Alanna Avery, Amber and Haley Harris, along with one very special friend and roommate, Nellie Amos.She was a graduate of the class of 1948 from William Fleming High School, a retiree of the Allstate Insurance Company, and a devoted member of Oakland Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held in Evergreen Burial Park. on November 23, 2007.⁶
