He preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1974. She is survived by one son, John Wesley Thomas of Virginia Beach, VA., one daughter, Shirley M. (Gene) Highfill of Champaign; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Pearle Drapkin of Bay Side, N.Y. She was preceded by her parents and two sisters. Mrs. Thomas had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1944. She had worked at the Dairy Queen's in Danville and Tilton for 18 years. He was born on July 11, 1936 in Wellington Illinois, the son of Otis and Ruth Highfill. Gene is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Thomas Alexander; daughters, Pamella Horn, Tina Underwood, Shelly Highfill and Lorri (Scott) Yeoward; grandchildren, Nick Wilkins, Tera Garrett, Cortney Highfill, Tiffany Murphy, Adam Hardy, Dylan Whitehead, Taylor and Jesse Alexander and great grandchildren, Preston and Parker Wilkins, Brayden, Kamden and Tinley Garrett, Iva Philbeck, Brendan Murphy-Hubert, Kiyre Murphy, Deonta and Jurrien Hill and Addilyn Hardy. Gene proudly served in the United States Army for six years at Fort Riley attaining the rate of Specialist 4th class . He was employed at Grabit Here and I.G.A. stores, the Ramada Inn and was a bus driver and custodian for Mahomet Seymour school for 30yrs. He did volunteer work at the Danville Genealogy Historical Library, was a member of the Mahomet Christian Church for 35 years and was a member of the Mahomet American Legion post 1015. Gene enjoyed collecting coins, camping, CB radios and had an infinate love for tomatoes. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eddie Highfill and sisters, Ruby Dale and Beulah Alhands.² He was born on July 11, 1936 at Wellington, Iroquois Co., Illinois.² He married Shirley Mae Thomas, daughter of Ross Leonard Thomas and Wynona Marie Ashmore, on October 5, 1963 at Boswell, Benton Co., Indiana.^1,2,4 Charles Eugene "Gene" Highfill died on June 29, 2018 at Champaign, Champaign Co., Illinois, at age 81.²

     Dorris Lorraine Shores The Essence of Dorris Lorraine Ward has transitioned from this life and has reunited with the spirits of family and friends. Dorris passed away unexpectedly on February 24, 2021. She was born on August 2, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Leon and Della Louise Shores. Her early life was spent in Terre Haute, Indiana, where she met and married her late husband Kenneth J. Ward. The family moved from Terre Haute to northeast Indiana, where they spent most of their married life in the Woodburn area. She worked and then retired from Phelps Dodge Magnet Wire Company, where she was employed as a lab technician in the Quality Control Lab. After retirement, Dorris moved to Florida, achieving her dream, resided in the Northport area for a number of years, and later returned to her hometown of Woodburn to be close to her family. Dorris leaves behind five of her seven children, Kenneth L. Ward (Melanie) of Jasonville, Indiana, Cynthia L. Barhydt (Kenneth) of Grabill, and Karen S. Hanefeld (Kevin), Connie G. Rothgeb (Steve), and Keri J. Bricault (Lee), all of Woodburn, Indiana. She was preceded in death by two of her children, Kristi A. Wahl and Curtis A. Ward. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great grand-children and a great-great grandchild as well as a number of close friends. She also leaves behind, a brother, Edward Shores (Patricia), of Eureka, Missouri, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Shores. Private graveside services will be conducted at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute, Indiana.¹ She was buried at Roselawn Memorial Park, 7500 North Clinton Road, Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.¹ Her married name was Ward.¹ She married Kenneth J. Ward died on June 14, 2017 at Indiana at age 53.² She Kristi Ann Ward Wahl, 53, passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, 1:40 a.m., surrounded by her loved ones after a valiant battle with cancer. Born April 27, 1964, in Terre Haute, Ind., she moved to Woodburn, Ind. in 1968, graduated from Woodlan High School in 1982 and attended Indiana Tech, obtaining a Certificate in Computer Programming. Kristi worked as an office manager at National Business Systems for four years, leaving that position to concentrate on raising her two sons. She then pursued a profession in food service at Ziffle's Rib Bar, where she garnered many friends, both employees and patrons. Kristi was a "people" person with an outgoing personality. So much so that she volunteered to be a participant in Research Studies involving experimental advanced cancer treatment medications. Any acquaintance became a friend and she touched many hearts. Kristi enjoyed vacationing in Vegas and organizing family holidays. Everyone enjoyed her creative gourmet cooking and baking skills. Kristi is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Michael Wahl of Fort Wayne; sons, Brandon (Abby) Wahl and Ryan Wahl, both of Fort Wayne; mother, Dorris Ward; brother Ken (Melanie) Ward; sisters, Cynthia (Ken) Barhydt, Connie (Steve) Rothgeb, Karen (Kevin) Hanefeld, and Keri (Lee) Bricault; father-in-law, Howard Wahl; mother-in-law, Pat Wahl; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Danielle) Wahl and Jerry (Tracy) Wahl; and sister-in-law, Teresa Cordes (Steve). She was loved, admired and respected by her numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Kenneth J. Ward, and her brother, Kert Ward. on June 18, 2017.²
