     Lewis Clair Glines INDEPENDENCE—A juvenile probation officer for Montgomery County, Clair Glines, died Monday evening at Mercy Hospital. He was 73. Glines had been a longtime resident here, and became probation officer for the county in 1959. Funeral arrangements are pending with the Potts Funeral Home. Glines was born Aug. 14, 1898 in Billings, Okla. and attended school in Tonkawa, Okla. After attending Oklahoma University, he worked in his father's drug store at Billings, Okla. Glines entered the U.S. Army in 1918 and was stationed In the U.S. during World War I. He was later employed at various oil companies, including Mid-Continent and Marlin Oil Companies. He moved here in 1929 and was bulk agent in this area for Texaco for 13 years. On Dec. 14, 1940, at Kansas City, Mo., he married Mary Ellen Patty, who died in 1951. On Dec. 31, 1953, he married Gladys Russell, who survives at the home. Glines was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of, Independence, the Masonic Lodge of Lawton,Okla., Elks Lodge No. 780 of Independence, and the Harold R. Andrews Post No. 139 of the American Legion at Independence. Survivors include two sons, George of Parsons, and Allen of Houston, Tex; two step-daughters, Elaine Russell of Salina, Kan., and Mrs. Betty Arville of Oklahoma City; a step-son, Martin of Springhill, Kan; a grandchild and four step-grandchildren.2 He was born on August 14, 1898 at Billings, Noble Co., Oklahoma Territory.1,2 He married Mary Ellen Patty, daughter of Edwin Robert Patty and Lucy M.      Alan Clair Edwin Glines was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, 1300 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas.1 He Alan Clair Edwin Glines, 69, of Independence, died Tuesday afternoon, July 3, 2012. He was the son of Lewis Clair Glines and Mary Ellen (Patty) Glines. He was born January 1, 1943 in Independence. He was a 1961 graduate of Independence High School and a 1966 graduate of the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He later earned a master's degree in Management Systems from the University of Southern California. He began his professional career with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Mission Control Center, Houston, TX immediately following college. He began with the Gemini Programand soon became a flight controller on the Apollo missions to the moon. He was the Integrated Communications Officer (INCO) supporting the ill-fated Apollo 13 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, along with other NASA controllers, for their efforts to successfully return the crippled spacecraft and its three astronauts to earth. After the last moon landings, he worked with the Skylabspace station for three manned missions and rose to Assistant Flight Director on the joint USA-Russian rendezvous in space on Apollo- Soyuz missions. He left NASA in 1979 and was a senior consulting engineer with the European Space Agency in Germany for ten years, then was a senior project specialist at TRW/Northrup-Grumman in California until his retirement in 2009, when he returned to Independence. He authored an autobiography, "A Kansan Conquers the Cosmos, or Spaced Out All My Life" detailing his early upbringing in Independence, his love of the theater sparked by his leading roles in high school and summer theater productions, and his long career as a NASA rocket scientist. The forward was written by Hubble Telescope repair expert and friend, Astronaut Story Musgrave. Alan held many awards and commendations and was a featured VIP speaker at many venues, including the University of Kansas Department of Aerospace Engineering, Pittsburg State University Physics Department, the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS, and his favorite, the annual Spacefest in Tuscson, AZ, where he met with his former colleagues, including nearly all of the living Gemini astronauts and the Apollo moon walkers. He attended many of the reunions in Houston, TX of the first and subsequent lunar landings and was on a first-name basis with all of the Apollo moon walkers. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Optimist Club, Rotary Club, and the Chamber of Commerce and attended all faithfully until his mobility decreased. He was preceded in death by his mother who died in 1950, his father, Clair Glines, and stepmother, Gladys (Russell) Glines. He is survived by one brother, George Glines and his wife, Elaine, Independence; two nephews, Andy Glines, Portland, Oregon and Jeff Glines, Purcell, Missouri, and a stepsister, Elaine Lyman, Salina. Funeral arrangements are with the Penwell-Gabel mortuary in Independence. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to his memory at the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson and can be left at the funeral home. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral will be at the Penwell Gabel Chapel on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, with the Rev. John P. Wilson of the Presbyterian Church, Independence, presiding.1 He was born on January 1, 1943 at Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas.1 He died on July 3, 2012 at Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas, at age 69.1

She was born Jan. 12, 1915, in Waterloo, daughter of John C. F. and Dorothea Horstmann Ehrig. She married George B. Patty on May 31, 1936, in Independence, Kan. She was a charter member of the Friends of the Library. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Linda Kaiser of Columbus, Ohio, and Martha Campbell of High Bridge, N.J; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by six brothers. There will be no visitation. Her body was donated to medical science. on February 26, 1987.1

Mrs. Gibson worked at the Kane Shirt Factory for ten years, then at Stoll's Dry Goods and later as a waitress at the Hillcrest Restaurant, both formerly in Kane. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kane, where she belonged to the King's Daughters Sunday School class, the Missionary Group and the Fellowship Group. She was active in the Meals on Wheels program, belonged to the Kane Senior Center and local chapter 294 of the AARP and volunteered at The Lutheran Home at Kane. She is survived by a daughter, Judith Punk of James City; a son, Paul Erickson of Frisco, Texas; a stepdaughter, Joyce Gill of Belle Vernon; several grandchildren; many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, in addition to her husbands and parents, by a stepdaughter, Patricia Walters; four sisters, Leda Murray, Mildred Wilkins, Avenell Roller and Dorothy Besecker; and four brothers, Shannon Johnston, John Johnston, Wade Johnson and Raymond Johnson.3 Her married name was Erickson.3 She was buried at Mount Tabor Cemetery, Kane, McKean Co., Pennsylvania.4 She married Harold Henry Erickson.3 Doris A. Johnston was born on March 15, 1914 at Parrish, Forest Co., Pennsylvania.3,4 As of July 16, 1960,her married name was Gibson.3 She married LeRoy "Roy" Gibson on July 16, 1960 at Kane, McKean Co., Pennsylvania.5,3 Doris A.
