Thornton, 94, of 1525 Wetmore Road near Kane, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2019 at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie. Born Jan. 3, 1925 in Kane, she was the daughter of Wayne and Esther Silvis McClellan. On Dec. 4, 1971, in Kane, she married Donald A. Thornton, who died in 1997. Betty had owned and operated Quality Cleaners and the Sportsmen's Restaurant, both in Sheffield; then the former Longview Inn restaurant and bar near Kane. She was an Avon representative for over 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kane, where she taught Sunday school. She had belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star in Kane and was an avid reader. Surviving are a son, John W. Grandinetti of Warren; daughters Rose Ann (J. Bruce) Ellis of Mercer, Gay (Matthew) Blau of Crooksville, Ohio and Debra German of Sheffield; grandchildren Marc Grandinetti, Stacey Bailey, Jennifer Ament, Jesse Grandinetti, Krystal Mergner, Elizabeth Ellis, Susan Felege, Rebecca Green, Bryan Blau, Blake Blau and Isabella Blau. Eleven great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death, besides her husband and parents, by siblings Sara Leonard and Wayne and Ted McClellan. Interment will follow in Gibbs Hill Cemetery in Ludlow. on February 18, 2019.4

He was a former secretary of the local Carpenters Union. Mr. Byham was a member of First Congregational Church. He was a baritone soloist in the church choir for many yearn. He was a former member of the Kane Men's Chorus. He formerly sang with his brothers in the popular Byham Quartet. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Miller Byham, to whom he was married Nov. 4, 1915 at Buffalo, N.Y; one daughter, Mrs. Gerald Baruth of Lincoln, Neb; two sons, Carl L. Byham, Jr., of Westport, Conn, and William E. Byham of South Williamsport; one sister, Miss Lois Byham of Kane; fvie brothers, Norman and Maurice Byham of Kane, Clyde Byham of New Castle, Del., Ray Byham of Palmer, Alaska and Don Byham of Tampa, Fla., and 10 grandchildren. Friends may call at the Cummings Funeral Home at the usual visiting hours, 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 o'clock, beginning this evening. Memorial services will be held at Cummings Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Clarke M. Cochrane of First Congregational Church officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery. on April 4, 1962.7

Born December 12, 1928, in Kane, he was a son of the late Carl and Hazel Miller Byham. Buck married the former Nellie Swartz and together they shared 63 years of marriage. Buck graduated from Kane High School in 1946 and the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1953. He was a teacher at Downingtown Sr. High School from 1953 to 1959 and South Williamsport High School from 1960 to 1983. After he finished his teaching career, Buck served as the Sports Information Director at Lycoming College from 1984 to 1991. Buck’s life was filled with many sports achievement and honors. Before attending college, he spent a year as a pitcher in minor-league baseball. While teaching at Downington and South Williamsport, Buck coached basketball, football and Baseball teams. He also was assistant coach for the Williamsport Millionaires baseball team. Buck spent countless years as a volunteer pitching coach to hundreds of athletes in and around Lycoming County including Little League, high school and college level players. Buck had his own daily radio program called the “Sports Digest” at the former WMPT Radio station. He covered local school age sporting events and highlighted individual standouts. His broadcasting also covered local high school and college sporting events as well as the Little League World Series for WWPA radio station. In honor of his many years of involvement with sports, Buck was inducted in the West Branch Chapter Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, the Bloomsburg University Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, and the Lycoming College Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. Buck was also honored with W. Howard Huntman Little League Baseball Friendship Award in 1993, the Dale V. Brown Service Award from Lycoming College in 2011, and was honored with a plaque on the Williamsport Sports Walk in 2016. Because of his many years of broadcasting Little League Baseball, Little League named the press row at Volunteer Stadium in his honor. Buck was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. In addition to his wife, Buck is survived by his children, Rob (Cathy) Byham, of Linden, and Kathleen (Mitchell) Boyle, of Dade City, Fla; five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Byham; and sister, Florence Baruth. A memorial service to honor the life of Buck will be at Messiah Lutheran Church, 324 S. Howard St., South Williamsport, with his pastor The Rev. Joshua L. Reinsburrow, officiating. A private interment will be held in Montoursville Cemetery. on June 2, 2017.5
