His Social Security Number was 415-62-7637.6 Edwin Jones Best Sr. was buried at New Providence Cemetery, Maryville, Blount Co., Tennessee.4 He Edwin Jones Best, Sr., 78 of Maryville, well known researcher and lecturer on local history died Sunday at Blount Memorial Hospital. He died research on the history of Greenback and on black history of Blount County, and gave speeches and lectures on these topics for various civic groups. He provided valuable information to The Daily Times for its 1992 award winning series on local black history. He also lectured to elementary school classes on Indians of Tennessee and the archaeology of the state. Best graduated from Greenback High School in 1932, from Maryville College cum laude in 1936. He died advance study at Harvard University, 1941-1942. He was retired from 39 years at TVA where he was budget officer for the Resource Group. He was sent to India in 1967 on loan to the U. S. Agency for International Development as a member of a team that helped the Fertilizer Corporation of India. During World War II, he served in the European Theater of Operations. He was among those who landed in France on D Day. In 1950 he was recalled to active duty with Office of Comptroller of the Army at the Pentagon During the Korean War. In 1952, he was transferred to inactive reserves and later retired as Lieutenant Colonel, Ordnance Corps, United States Army Reserves. Best had served on the Maryville College Board of Directors and Blount Memorial Hospital Board. Since 1946, he has been a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and clerk of session. He was active with the friends of the Blount County Public Library and was a leader in the effort to build a new library for the community. Best was also a member of the State Historical Society to which he contributed articles for "The Journal of East Tennessee History". He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lynn Ann Brown Best; son and daughter in law, Edwin J Best Jr. and Caroline Munn Best; grandchildren, Sarah Lynn, Katherine Ann and John Riley Best. Also surviving him are sisters and brother in law, Elizabeth and Ernest Williams, Greenback, Nora and Ray Teter of Lake Wales, Fla., and brother and sister in law John R. and Mary Best of Greenback, sister in law, Mary Gladys Pieper of Maryville; brother and sister in law, George S. and Mary Emma Allen Brown of Elizabethton. He was preceded in death by parents John Riley and Lena Best and brother, Joe Allen Best.5 He was born on June 24, 1914 at Greenback, Loudon Co., Tennessee.6,7,3,4 He married Leone Ann "Lynn"" Brown, daughter of Leon William Brown and Sarah Adella "Della" Sutton, on September 3, 1938 at Carter Co., Tennessee.1,2,5 Edwin Jones Best Sr. died on April 25, 1993 at Maryville, Blount Co., Tennessee, at age 78.7,6,4,5

Mary Emma Allen Mary Emma Brown passed away at the age of 93 on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the Cornerstone Village. Emy was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton, a dedicated public school teacher for over 35 years, and a graduate of East Tennessee State Teachers College. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mary Emma was devoted to her family; always ready to entertain a child with a string trick or set out on a blueberry picking adventure. A gracious hostess, she always delighted in entertaining family and friends. Her contributions to the community were never forgotten by the countless students she taught over the years. Out on the town, it was a regular occurrence for a former student to stop and tell her what an influence she had been to his or her life. She is preceded in death by her husband George S. Brown; her parents Judge W.R. Allen and wife Laura Renfro Allen; eight siblings: Judge Ben Allen, Kate Allen Clemons, Annie B. Allen, Laura Allen Thomas, Lena Allen Taylor, Howard Allen, R. J. Allen, and Floyd Allen. She is survived by two sons Lynn W. Brown (partner, Carol Carr) and Sutton Brown (spouse, Beverly Brown); four grandchildren: Laura Brown, Whitman Brown, Taylor Brown, and Benjamin Brown; four great-grandchildren; and a very special cousin Elizabeth Allen. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 13 at 2:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton.3 She was born on March 26, 1924.4 As of February 23, 1946,her married name was Brown.2 She married George Sutton Brown, son of Leon William Brown and Sarah Adella "Della" Sutton, on February 23, 1946 at Carter Co., Tennessee.1,2,3 Mary Emma Allen died on August 9, 2017 at Elizabethton, Carter Co., Tennessee, at age 93.3
