In addition, he was First Worthy Patron for Mountain Chapter #168 O.E.S. from 1955-1957 and Worthy Patron twice from 1961-1962 and 1968-1969. Mr. Hancock was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Hancock, and a sister, Kathleen Barnett. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucille Brogan Hancock; one son and daughter-in-law, John Max Hancock Jr. and Sandra A. Hancock, Vinton; four daughters and one son-in-law, Maxine Grubbs, Jane Hancock, Diane Hancock, all of Salem, Peggy and William (Billy) Carter, Terre Haute, Ind; seven grandchildren, Sgt. Lewis M. Grubbs Jr. and wife, Joni, Anchorage, Alaska, Kristie Carter, Budapest, Hungary, Julie Carter, Terre Haute, Ind., Tiffany Hancock, John Hancock, Caroline Carter, all of Vinton, Joseph Grubbs; two grandchildren, Chris and Joseph Grubbs, Anchorage, Alaska; devoted friends, Paul and Dollie Braisted. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, with the Rev. Thomas Joyce and the Rev. Paul Braisted officiating. Burial will follow in Fair View Cemetery with Mountain Lodge #140 A.F.&A.M. officiating. on August 1, 1996.6

Diane was born in Craig County, Va., on April 1, 1947, to the late John Max Hancock Sr. and Lucille Brogan Hancock. In addition to her parents Diane was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Hancock. Diane attended the VA School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Va. She was retired from Maid Best Uniforms. For many years, Diane enjoyed weekly activities with the Roanoke Valley Club for the Deaf. When Diane's parents became disabled, she and her sister Jane, with weekly assistance from their brother, lived together until Diane had to go into the nursing home one year ago. Diane will be deeply missed by her sister Jane. Diane is survived by her brother, John Max Hancock Jr. and wife, Sandra, of Vinton; twin sister, Peggy H. Carter, and husband, Billy, of Avon, Ind; sisters, Jane Hancock and Maxine H. Hall, both of Salem; nephews, John R. Hancock, Harrisonburg, Va., Lewis Grubbs and wife Cindy, Kathleen, Ga., Joseph Grubbs, Salem; nieces, Tiffany H. McCormack and husband, Rusty, Caroline H. Williams and husband, Josh, both of Vinton, Kristi C. Scherler and husband, Rob, Akron, Ohio, Julie C. Compton and husband, John, Brownsburg, Ind. Diane is also survived by seven great-nephews and four great-nieces. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 27, 2017, at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Fairview Cemetery in Roanoke. on January 27, 2017.4

He was the son of the late Dr. Harry Gilman and Elizabeth Revercomb Hudnall. He was educated at Augusta Military Academy and the University of Virginia and was known throughout the mountains in which he had grown up as an avid outdoorsman and a man of exceptional integrity. He had been a businessman, both self-employed and as a faithful employee, before his health required that he retire to a quieter life. He loved southern history and was especially proud of his family's Virginia heritage. One grandfather, the Honorable George Anderson Revercomb, had been a Virginia state senator and a Virginia Supreme Court justice, and the other grandfather, Dr. Bertrand Ryland Hudnall, had been a beloved physician who had delivered many of the babies in Alleghany County. He was proudest, however, of his two daughters, Anne Ryland Hudnall, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Alice Yuille Chapman Hudnall (Sally), who had been his loving caregiver in the final months of his life. He is also survived by brothers, Bertrand R. Hudnall II, of Charleston, S.C., and Harry Gilman Hudnall Jr., of Atlanta, Ga., and their families. A memorial service will be held in the fall in Covington at a date to be announced. on July 9, 2010.4
